EDC Full Form
Electronic Data Capture
What does EDC stand for? A technology term, explained.
EDC Full Form in English, letter by letter
EDC stands for Electronic Data Capture: collecting data directly into a computer system, in clinical trials and on Indian card machines.
EDC Full Form in Indian Languages
EDC in a clinical research job means Electronic Data Capture, and a shop talking about an EDC machine means the same words applied to card payments. Here is the name in six Indian languages.
One abbreviation, two workplaces
EDC stands for Electronic Data Capture: collecting information directly into a computer system instead of writing it on paper and typing it in later. In clinical research it describes the web-based systems where trial sites record patient data.
The second workplace is payments. In Indian banking, a card swipe machine at a shop or restaurant is often called an EDC machine, because it captures the card details and transaction data electronically at the counter.
Same words, different job. One removes paper from a regulated medical study, the other removes the handwritten slip at the billing desk.
How EDC works inside a clinical trial
The study team designs electronic case report forms, one set for each patient visit, with the exact fields the protocol requires. Data managers build edit checks behind them, so a haemoglobin value of 40 or a visit date recorded before the first dose is flagged the moment it is typed.
Queries follow. A data manager raises a question inside the system, the site corrects or explains the record, and every change lands in an audit trail showing who altered what and when. Regulators expect that trail, which is why pen corrections on paper no longer satisfy anyone.
Adverse events and medicines are coded against standard dictionaries, MedDRA for events and the WHO Drug Dictionary for medications, so ten sites describing the same reaction end up with one code.
Before analysis the database is locked, and the data moves to regulators in standard structures such as CDISC's SDTM. The FDA's 21 CFR Part 11 sets expectations for electronic records and signatures, while ICH E6 good clinical practice covers how trials are conducted.
Why EDC replaced paper case report forms
Remove the transcription step and you remove a whole class of typing errors, the trolleys of forms and the wait for a monitor to visit. Queries that once took weeks close in days, and monitors review flagged records remotely.
India is a large trial market. Hospitals and contract research organisations in cities such as Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune and Delhi enter data into the same kind of system used by sites in the United States and Europe.
The trade-off is rigour. An EDC build must be validated and documented before the trial starts, and changing a question mid-study needs approvals and version history, so what looks like a small edit can take weeks.
Roles, registration and the daily routine
Access is role-based. An investigator can sign a page, a data manager can query and correct, a monitor can only read, and nobody can delete a record outright, because deletion would break the audit trail.
Trials in India must also be registered in the Clinical Trials Registry of India, run from ICMR's National Institute of Medical Statistics, and the timestamps in an EDC system are one of the places where dates are checked against that registration.
EDC in banking and card terminals
On the payments side, the EDC machine is the point-of-sale terminal given to a merchant by a bank or payment company. It reads the chip or magnetic stripe or a tap, sends the transaction for authorisation and prints a charge slip.
The fee a merchant pays on each card sale is often called EDC charges in everyday talk, though the formal term is the merchant discount rate. If a shopkeeper says EDC rent, they mean the monthly fee for the machine itself.
Read the sector before replying to a job advertisement. Pharma and contract research roles mean clinical data management, while merchant services and bank branch roles mean card terminals and reconciliation.
If you are choosing between the two career paths, clinical data management roles usually ask for a life-science or pharmacy degree, familiarity with an EDC system and knowledge of good clinical practice. Merchant services roles ask for banking knowledge and comfort with reconciliation and settlement reports.
The abbreviation tells you the workplace within seconds: a clinical research site working on case report forms, or a counter with a card machine. In both, information enters the system once, at the source, with a record behind it.
EDC Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of EDC?
Electronic Data Capture. It means entering information straight into a computer system instead of writing it on paper first. In clinical trials it refers to electronic case report forms, and in Indian banking it is used for card machines.
How is EDC used in clinical trials?
Sites enter patient data into web-based forms as each visit happens. Edit checks flag impossible values, data managers raise queries, corrections stay in a time-stamped audit trail, and the database is locked before analysis.
What is an EDC machine in payments?
It is a card terminal at a shop that captures card details when a card is swiped, inserted or tapped. The per-transaction fee on it is often called EDC charges, formally the merchant discount rate.
What is the difference between EDC and a paper case report form?
Paper forms are filled by hand, transcribed by a second team and checked on site. EDC removes the transcription step, allows queries in real time and gives regulators a time-stamped record of every change.
Which standards apply to an EDC system?
ICH E6 good clinical practice governs trial conduct and data integrity, the FDA's 21 CFR Part 11 covers electronic records and signatures, and CDISC standards such as SDTM shape the datasets submitted to regulators.
Is an EDC machine the same as a POS machine?
In everyday Indian use, yes. The card terminal is called a POS or EDC machine interchangeably, though POS can also mean the whole billing system of a shop.
