What a DP is, and where the word comes from

A display picture is the small photo that represents you on a social account or messaging app. It sits beside your name in chats, comments and contact lists. On WhatsApp the setting is literally called Profile photo, but almost everyone in India still calls the image a DP. Facebook and LinkedIn say profile picture, and Instagram and X say profile photo.

The abbreviation grew out of chat and messaging habits. People on early social networks and phone messengers shortened everything, and DP stuck, especially in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Elsewhere you will hear avatar, pfp or profile pic more often. The meaning is the same, so a foreign friend who asks for your profile pic wants exactly what an Indian friend means by DP.

DP also has other meanings, which is why searches for it throw up odd results. In maths and computer science it can mean dynamic programming. In sports and some offices it can be a short form for a person's name or a designation. When someone says DP in a chat about WhatsApp or Instagram, it is the photo.

Setting a DP that survives the crop

Almost every app crops your upload into a square and then shows it as a circle. Keep your face in the centre with a little space around it. A wide group photo loses its sides, and the crop usually cuts someone's head off or leaves you as a tiny dot in the middle.

Sharpness matters more than file size. A blurry photo enlarged from an old album looks worse than a clean, well-lit picture at modest resolution. WhatsApp compresses images anyway, so a sharp JPEG is the practical choice. Keep PNG for logos or pictures with text, such as a shop's DP.

Daylight near a window works better than any filter. Keep the background plain, hold the phone at eye level and take a few shots. If the app shows a preview circle before you save, check that your forehead and chin are both still inside it.

Privacy: who gets to see your DP

On WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Privacy, then Profile photo. You can pick Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except, or Nobody. The except option is useful for a professional photo you want known contacts to see while hiding it from the many unknown numbers that have yours, such as delivery staff, agents and old group members.

Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn have their own controls, and on most of them a public account shows the profile photo to anyone. That matters because the DP is the image most easily copied into a fake profile. If you run a public page or a business account, assume strangers will see and save it.

For children, avoid using a school uniform or school name in the photo. A DP of a child on a public account tells strangers more than parents usually intend.

DP, avatar, profile picture and cover photo

Profile picture

The term Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn use for the same image. It is functionally identical to a DP. The difference is regional phrasing, not anything technical.

Avatar

On Facebook, Snapchat and WhatsApp an avatar is a cartoon version of you built from emoji-style features, not a photograph. Reddit and Discord also use avatar for the user image, and there it can be any picture, including a drawing or a logo.

Cover, banner and status

The cover photo is the wide banner behind a profile, and a status or story is temporary content that disappears after a day. Neither replaces the DP, which stays as the permanent identifier.

Stolen DPs and fake profiles

Scammers lift photos from public accounts and use them to make a fake profile look real. A common pattern in India is a message from an unknown number whose DP shows a smiling officer, a doctor or a friend's relative, asking for money urgently. If the photo looks too polished, run a reverse image search with Google Lens, and be wary of accounts with one photo and no history.

If someone messages from a new number claiming to be a known person, call the old number before sending anything. Do not rely on the DP as proof of identity, since anyone can save and upload your photo in seconds.

If you find your photo on a fake account, report the profile through the app's report option, tell your contacts, and switch your own DP to My contacts on WhatsApp for a while. A cyber crime complaint can also be filed on the national cyber crime portal if money or threats are involved.

Fraud messages often arrive by SMS or WhatsApp from numbers you do not know. A genuine bank or government office will never ask you to share an OTP over chat, whatever photo the sender uses. If a message creates urgency, stop and verify through a number you already trust.

Why recruiters notice your DP

A recruiter who searches your name often sees the photo before the CV. A clear, plain, recent photograph reads better than a party picture or a heavy filter, and on LinkedIn a head-and-shoulders shot on a plain background is the usual choice. On WhatsApp, a professional-looking DP matters if you use the same number for work enquiries.

The same applies to your CV. Indian applications rarely need a photo on the CV, but many online job profiles ask for one, so keep a separate, clean image saved for that purpose instead of reusing a cropped holiday picture.

Treat your DP as a public identity card. Choose a clear, current photo you would not mind a stranger or a recruiter seeing, and check the privacy setting on every app where you use it.

DP Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of DP?

DP stands for Display Picture, the profile photograph used on WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and other apps. In India it is used where other regions say profile picture, profile photo or avatar.

What size should a WhatsApp DP be?

Keep it square. WhatsApp crops the image into a circle for display, so a square photo with the face centred works best. A sharp, reasonably sized JPEG is enough because WhatsApp compresses images anyway.

How do I hide my DP on WhatsApp?

Go to Settings, then Privacy, then Profile photo, and choose My contacts, My contacts except, or Nobody. The except option lets you hide it from selected people without hiding it from everyone.

Is a DP the same as an avatar?

Not always. A DP is usually a photograph, while an avatar is a cartoon or emoji-style figure, as on Facebook and WhatsApp. On some sites, avatar is simply the word for the profile image.

Why can I not see someone's DP on WhatsApp?

Either they have set the photo to be visible only to certain contacts, or they have blocked you, or they have not set a photo at all. WhatsApp does not tell you which of these is the reason, so a missing DP alone does not prove a block.

What is the best DP for LinkedIn?

A recent, well-lit, head-and-shoulders photograph on a plain background, without filters or other people in it. It should look like you on a normal working day.
