The full form and the founding

HCL full form is Hindustan Computers Limited. Shiv Nadar and a handful of colleagues set the company up in 1976, when imported machines dominated Indian offices and computing was seen as something that came from abroad.

HCL began on the hardware side, working on microprocessor-based systems and personal computers. Over the years the group changed names, adding a joint venture with Hewlett-Packard in the early 1990s, and later split its businesses into separately listed companies. The headquarters of the main services company is in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

That 1970s start matters. HCL was among the small group of Indian firms that built the base for the country's computer and software industry before outsourcing became a large business.

From hardware maker to IT services major

Through the 1990s and 2000s the group shifted towards software services and offshore delivery for overseas clients, which is where HCL Technologies grew into a large listed company. HCL Infosystems, a separate listed entity, kept the hardware and distribution side.

In 2022 HCL Technologies rebranded as HCLTech, keeping the same NSE and BSE listing. Customers, exam questions and older documents still say HCL Technologies.

The business today spans applications, infrastructure management, cybersecurity, cloud and engineering and research and development work, where clients pay to have products designed and tested. The engineering work is unusual among Indian IT firms.

The group is led by the Nadar family. Shiv Nadar built the company, and his daughter Roshni Nadar Malhotra is the chairperson of HCLTech. The Shiv Nadar Foundation, set up by the founder, runs educational institutions and other charitable work, though it is separate from the listed companies.

Scale and place in Indian IT

HCLTech employs more than two lakh people across dozens of countries and reports annual revenue above 13 billion US dollars. It is usually counted among the four largest Indian IT services firms, alongside TCS, Infosys and Wipro.

The wider sector is the backbone of Indian services exports. NASSCOM, the industry body, has reported the Indian technology industry in the range of 250 billion dollars a year in revenue in recent years, employing millions of people directly. Check the latest NASSCOM release for the current figure.

HCL's distinctive slice is product and platform engineering work for global hardware and software companies. This is harder to replicate than routine application maintenance and gives it a different client profile from its rivals.

Hiring at this scale also shapes Indian cities. Large HCLTech campuses in places such as Noida, Chennai and Bengaluru bring in thousands of fresh graduates each year, and campus placement lists for engineering colleges regularly name the company among recruiters. Salary and role details change every year, so rely on the offer letter and the careers page.

The IBM software deal and other acquisitions

In December 2018 HCL agreed to buy seven software products from IBM for about 1.8 billion dollars, including AppScan for security testing and BigFix for device management. The deal closed in 2019 and the products now sit under HCL Software.

Earlier deals in networking, telecom software and SAP consulting built the portfolio, and the pattern is consistent: buy product lines that generate licence revenue, then grow them with the offshore engineering base.

For users, the practical effect is that software that was IBM's a few years ago may now be licensed and supported by HCL without any change to the product.

Where the HCL name turns up in India

In hiring, HCLTech runs large graduate programmes, including TechBee, which takes students after Class 12 into training with a job at the end, alongside its usual engineering fresher intake. Check the company's careers page for current eligibility and terms.

In markets, the group has separately listed companies, with HCLTech for services and HCL Infosystems for hardware and distribution, so the ticker on a screen is not always the company you expect.

In daily conversation Indians often say HCL loosely for any of these, which is why the full form, Hindustan Computers Limited, is worth knowing precisely.

One caution for job seekers. Genuine employers, including HCLTech, do not ask candidates to pay a fee for a job or an interview. Offer letters from unknown email addresses or phone numbers, or messages that ask for money, are common scams. Verify any offer on the company's own careers website before sharing documents or making any payment.

Hindustan Computers Limited shows how far Indian technology firms have come since 1976, from building machines at home to selling engineering services worldwide. Remember the separate listed companies and the 2022 rebrand, and the HCL references around you stop being ambiguous.
