What the IGCSE actually is
IGCSE full form is International General Certificate of Secondary Education, a qualification from Cambridge Assessment International Education taken at about the Class 10 level, normally by students aged 14 to 16. Students receive a separate result for each subject, not one consolidated mark sheet.
Cambridge developed it in the 1980s for students outside the United Kingdom, and it is now taken in many countries. In India it sits alongside CBSE, ICSE and state boards, and it is the usual Class 10 route in international schools.
Core and extended papers, and the grades
Many subjects come in a core version and an extended version. Core keeps the content accessible and awards grades from C to G, while extended stretches to A* and suits students aiming at the top grades. Some subjects, such as mathematics, offer a choice of routes.
Grades run from A* to G, with U for ungraded. That is a different scale from a CBSE mark sheet out of 100, which is why parents comparing the two often get confused. Many schools also report a predicted grade to colleges later.
What students actually study
Most schools ask for five to nine subjects. English, mathematics and a science are taken almost everywhere, and students add a humanities subject, a second language and one or two electives such as business studies, economics, computer science or global perspectives.
Indian languages are available: Cambridge offers papers in Hindi and several other languages, so students do not have to drop an Indian language to fit the timetable. Check the list for your school.
Exam sessions run in May and June and in October and November, and for some centres in India there is also a February and March series. A student who misses a grade can resit without losing a full year.
Most subjects are examined in written papers, with coursework or a practical test in some, such as the sciences and art, and speaking tests in languages. Cambridge does not fix subject combinations, so the school sets what you must take. If you later move to a CBSE school for Class 11, expect to give your IGCSE certificate and possibly an equivalence document, so ask the new school what it needs.
How it differs from ICSE and CBSE
ICSE is the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education, run by CISCE, an Indian board and not Cambridge. CBSE is a central board that follows the NCERT-based syllabus. IGCSE is international, uses coursework and practical assessment in several subjects, and charges an exam fee per subject.
Question style also differs. IGCSE rewards explanation and structured written answers, and the science papers include practical work or a practical-skills paper. Students who move from CBSE to IGCSE around Class 9 usually need a term to get used to the pattern.
Recognition in India and what comes after
IGCSE is a Class 10 qualification. For Classes 11 and 12, families either continue with Cambridge AS and A Levels, switch to the IB Diploma, or move to CBSE or ISC to keep Indian university options simple.
Indian colleges generally accept IGCSE when the school is established and the later results are strong, so check the requirements of the universities you are targeting early. A Levels are recognised for undergraduate entry in the United Kingdom and many other countries.
Where it is offered, and what it costs
Schools offering IGCSE cluster in the big cities, especially Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai, with international schools in smaller cities following. Fees are usually higher than at CBSE schools, because Cambridge charges per subject and schools need teachers trained in its methods.
Budget also for the exam fee per subject and the practical components. Ask at admission whether the school runs IGCSE only to Class 10 and hands over to another board afterwards, since that changes the cost and the options of the next two years.
IGCSE, International General Certificate of Secondary Education, is the Cambridge Class 10 route. Compare the school's record, the subject levels offered and the cost of the two years that follow before you commit.
