What IGNOU is

IGNOU full form is Indira Gandhi National Open University, set up by an Act of Parliament in 1985 and named after the former Prime Minister. From its headquarters in New Delhi it runs degree, diploma and certificate programmes through regional centres and study centres across the country.

It is among the largest open universities in the world by enrolment, and its study material is available in English, Hindi and several other Indian languages. Programmes are recognised by the UGC under its open and distance learning rules, so the degrees count for government jobs and further study.

How admission and study actually work

There are two admission cycles, January and July, applied for online through the IGNOU website. You receive printed or PDF study material, access to an online platform, and a study centre where counselling sessions are held, usually a few classes per course.

Attendance is not compulsory in the classroom sense. You study from your own city, while the study centre handles counselling, practicals and assignments, which is why learners with transferable jobs or postings abroad can continue a programme without losing a year to a transfer.

To enrol, pick a programme, read the eligibility and fee details in the prospectus, create an account, upload your marksheets, photograph and signature, and pay the fee online. Keep your enrolment number safe, since it is needed for assignments and exam forms. Courses carry credits, and a degree needs a set total, so you can clear courses in an order that suits you. Term-end results come some weeks after the exams, and you can apply for re-evaluation for a fee.

Assignments and term-end exams

Most courses weight assignments at 30 percent and the term-end examination at 70 percent. Assignments must be submitted before the deadline given for each session, and a student who skips them cannot sit the final paper even if the syllabus is fully prepared.

Term-end exams are held twice a year, in June and December, at designated exam centres, with three-hour papers for most degree courses. The grade card shows assignment and exam marks separately, and a course is cleared only when both parts are passed.

Courses IGNOU is known for

The popular ones are BA, B.Com and BCA at the undergraduate level, MA, M.Com and MCA after graduation, plus the MBA, PG diplomas and short certificate courses. IGNOU also offers teacher training and awards research degrees up to PhD.

Certificate courses in food and nutrition, disaster management, computer literacy, yoga and Indian languages are affordable and short, which is why many students add one alongside a regular degree at another university.

BCA and MCA learners attend practical sessions at their study centre, and those practical marks sit alongside the assignment and exam components on the grade card.

Who actually studies at IGNOU

The typical learner is already working: a bank clerk preparing for promotion, a schoolteacher, a jawan posted away from home, or a graduate in a small town who never got a seat in a regular college. Fees are low, with most degrees costing a few thousand rupees a year.

Admission needs only the previous qualification for most courses. The MBA and the research programmes have their own tests or interviews. Each programme has a maximum duration within which you must finish, and fees are listed on the university's own site.

Is an IGNOU degree valid?

Yes. IGNOU is a central university created by Parliament, and its recognised degrees are accepted for UPSC and state public service exams, PSU recruitment and admission to postgraduate programmes, as long as the course is on the recognised list.

The trade-off is pace, not validity. Deadlines for assignments and exams come on fixed dates, and most learners who drop out do so because they missed a June or December paper, not because the material was difficult.

IGNOU, Indira Gandhi National Open University, keeps a degree open to people with jobs, postings and tight budgets. Watch the January and July cycles and plan around the assignment deadlines.
