TRP Full Form
Television Rating Point
What does TRP stand for? A entertainment term, explained.
TRP Full Form in English, letter by letter
TRP is Television Rating Point, the weekly audience measure that shows how many homes watched a TV programme and helps price advertising.
TRP Full Form in Indian Languages
Every Thursday, news channels announce which serial topped the TRP chart. Television Rating Point is the number that decides which shows earn their advertising money.
What a rating point measures
A Television Rating Point is the share of the television audience that watched a programme, shown as a percentage of the universe being measured. A rating of 3 means that about three in every hundred people (or homes, depending on the measure) in that market were tuned in during the period.
The number matters because advertising is priced on it. A prime-time slot on a show with a high rating fetches many times the rate of the same slot on a show with a low one, and channel sales teams quote the weekly ratings in every negotiation with an advertising agency.
Check the date on any chart you see online: ratings are published weekly, and a headline can refer to a week that is already several weeks old.
How ratings are collected in India
Since 2015 the work has been done by BARC India, the Broadcast Audience Research Council, a body set up by broadcasters, advertisers and advertising agencies together. BARC installs a metering device in a sample of homes chosen across states, towns and income groups. The panel has run to tens of thousands of homes.
Each meter records what the television in that home is playing, minute by minute, and the data is scaled up to represent all television-owning households. Ratings are released weekly, usually on Thursday, split by market and genre. Before BARC, the industry relied on TAM Media Research, whose panel and methods were disputed by broadcasters, which is one reason the industry created its own council.
What pushes a rating up
Genre matters hugely. Hindi general entertainment and Hindi news reach deep into small-town and rural India, and a single India cricket match, or a big IPL night, can give a sports channel its best week of the year. Regional-language serials often top the charts in their own states.
Within a genre, ratings follow habit: the nine o'clock fiction slot, the morning news bulletin, the weekend reality show. Critics also point to a darker pattern. Loud news debates and crime shows are accused of chasing outrage because outrage holds attention, and that criticism sits underneath most arguments about TRP on Indian television.
The 2020 TRP case and what changed
In October 2020, Mumbai Police alleged that some channels, including Republic TV and two Marathi channels, had inflated their ratings by paying families in the meter panel to keep particular channels on. The channels denied the allegation and the matter went through the courts, but the claim put the measurement system itself on trial.
BARC stopped publishing weekly ratings for news channels. They returned in March 2022, about seventeen to eighteen months later, after a review of the system, and now use a four-week rolling average for the news and niche genres to reduce sudden jumps. It showed how easily a number tied to so much money can be fought over.
What a TRP figure leaves out
A panel of tens of thousands of homes cannot capture every way people watch. Viewing in offices and tea shops, recorded programmes and streaming on phones all sit outside the traditional television number. BARC and the industry have been working to bring more of these into measurement, but the tally is not yet one unified count across screens.
Streaming services, the OTT platforms, report viewing through their own data, such as views and watch time, and those figures are not audited in the same way as broadcast ratings. Even so, TRP remains the closest thing Indian television has to a scoreboard, and it still sets the rate card for large reach campaigns.
TRP, TVR and GRP are not the same
Industry documents use look-alike terms. TVR (television viewership rating) is the average rating for a programme, while Gross Rating Points (GRP) add up the ratings of every advertisement in a campaign, which is how an advertiser describes the total weight of a plan. People often use TRP loosely for all of them.
Rating points also differ by audience slice. Advertisers rarely buy the whole market: they ask for ratings among a particular age group, city class or income band, so a show with a modest overall rating can still be priced high if it reaches the right households. This is why a late-night news show and a morning cartoon block can both be commercially healthy with very different numbers.
For a viewer, the practical lesson is that a high rating does not measure quality or even how much people enjoyed a show. It measures how many were watching, and that is the number advertisers pay for.
TRP is where television's economics become visible: a weekly number that decides budgets, schedules and which debates get louder. Knowing how the panel works also tells you what the number cannot show.
TRP Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of TRP?
TRP stands for Television Rating Point, a measure of the share of the television audience watching a programme, used to price advertising on Indian television.
Who measures TRP in India?
BARC India, the Broadcast Audience Research Council, a body formed by broadcasters, advertisers and advertising agencies. It uses electronic meters in a large sample of homes.
How is TRP calculated?
Meters in sampled households record what each television plays minute by minute. The results are scaled up to represent all television households in a market and published as weekly ratings.
What was the 2020 TRP case?
Mumbai Police alleged that some channels paid homes in the meter panel to keep their sets tuned to them. The channels denied it. BARC stopped news ratings and resumed them in March 2022.
Why do high-TRP shows cost more for advertisers?
TRP is a proxy for reach. The more people a programme reaches, the more valuable an advertising slot in it, so rates rise with the rating.
Does TRP apply to YouTube or OTT?
No. TRP is a television measure. YouTube and OTT platforms report views and watch time from their own data, which are not directly comparable with broadcast ratings.
