What the IPL is

The Indian Premier League is a professional Twenty20 cricket league owned and run by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The first season ran in 2008, launched on the back of India's win in the inaugural World T20 in September 2007 and a franchise model borrowed from American sport.

Ten teams now play a 74-match season, usually from March to May or early June: Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.

Each match is 20 overs a side. After the league stage, the top two teams play Qualifier 1, the third and fourth teams play an Eliminator, the Qualifier 1 loser plays the Eliminator winner in Qualifier 2, and the winners of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2 meet in the final. The top two teams get a second chance; third and fourth do not.

Each franchise is owned by a company or a group, such as a business house, a media firm or a film personality, and pays the BCCI for the right to field a team. Home matches are played in the franchise's city stadium, with a few neutral venues for playoffs, so crowds, travel and weather all shape the schedule.

Titles and rivalries

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have five titles each, the most in the league. Kolkata Knight Riders have three. RCB won their first title in 2025 and retained it in 2026, beating Gujarat Titans in the final. Rajasthan Royals (the 2008 champions), Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans have one each, as did the now-defunct Deccan Chargers in 2009.

The Orange Cap for most runs and the Purple Cap for most wickets travel through the season, and a player of the match is announced in every game.

Franchises have also come and gone. Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions played in 2016 and 2017 while Chennai and Rajasthan were suspended, and Deccan Chargers and Kochi Tuskers Kerala disappeared from the league, which is why the history of such a young competition feels unusually eventful.

The auction and the money

The economics rest on media rights sold for about ₹48,390 crore for the 2023 to 2027 cycle (television and digital together), one of the largest broadcasting deals in world sport.

How the player auction works

A mega auction rebuilds the squads every few years, with a smaller auction in between. Players list a base price, franchises raise each other, and the highest bidder signs. In the 2025 mega auction, held in Jeddah, Rishabh Pant moved to Lucknow for ₹27 crore, an IPL record at the time.

Salary cap and retention

For the 2025 season each franchise could spend ₹120 crore on its squad, up from ₹100 crore previously, with up to six retentions allowed before the auction. Central revenue from broadcasting and sponsorship is then divided among the teams.

Records worth knowing

Virat Kohli is the league's all-time leading run-scorer, and he also holds the record for most runs in a single season: 973 for Royal Challengers in 2016.

Yuzvendra Chahal is the leading wicket-taker. The highest individual score belongs to Chris Gayle, an unbeaten 175 for Bangalore in 2013, built on a century reached in just 30 balls.

These numbers turn up beyond the sports pages. Basic IPL facts are regular material in the general awareness sections of Indian exams, so records change with each season and are worth rechecking before a test.

What the IPL changed for Indian cricket

The league is a huge shop window for Indian domestic talent. Unknown state-level players are seen by scouts, coaches and national selectors over several weeks, and several India regulars were first noticed here.

It also brought young Indian cricketers into regular contact with the world's best overseas players, and a franchise contract can change a family's finances in a single season.

The Women's Premier League, run by the BCCI since 2023, followed the same model with five teams and raised women's cricket salaries in India. It is a separate competition with its own auction and season, which is why people sometimes mix up IPL and WPL.

The IPL turned a few weeks of cricket into a full industry. Keep the team list, the 2008 start date and the latest champions in mind for exams, and recheck records after each season.
