PVR Full Form in Indian Languages
PVR is a company name, so these cards simply show how Priya Village Roadshow is written in each script.
The name comes from a Delhi hall and an Australian partner
PVR is Priya Village Roadshow. If you grew up in Delhi, the Priya part will make sense straight away: the company began with Priya Cinema in Vasant Vihar, a hall that Ajay Bijli's father bought in 1978.
Village Roadshow is the second half. It is an Australian entertainment company, and in the mid-1990s it went into a joint venture with Priya Exhibitors Private Limited. That is how the three words ended up squeezed into three letters. Some sources date the partnership to 1995 and others date the start of operations to 1997, since the first multiplex opened after the deal was signed.
From one old hall to the first modern multiplex
Ajay Bijli took over the Vasant Vihar hall in 1988 and had it revamped in 1990. Then came the big step. Commercial operations began in June 1997 at Saket in New Delhi, which is described as the first modern multiplex in India.
Cinema at the time meant large single-screen halls with ceiling fans and one film at a time. A multiplex with several screens under one roof, a food court and proper seats changed how families planned a weekend.
Village Roadshow later pulled out of the venture, and the company listed on the stock exchanges, NSE and BSE, in 2006. Private investors, including funds linked to ICICI, backed it during its growth years. Over time it added premium formats such as IMAX and 4DX screens in several cities.
Why your ticket may now say PVR INOX
INOX Leisure was the other big Indian multiplex chain, from the Inox Group of Mumbai. In March 2022 it announced a merger with PVR. The National Company Law Tribunal approved it on 12 January 2023, and in February 2023 the company became PVR INOX.
Hall names did not all change overnight. Properties that already existed keep their PVR or INOX branding, while new ones carry PVR INOX. The combined company runs well over a thousand screens in more than a hundred Indian cities and a few outside the country. Those numbers keep moving, so check the company's own site for the current count.
How the name stayed even as the company changed
The joint venture ended and the Australian partner left, but the company kept the letters because audiences already knew them. Many Indian brands do the same, keeping an old abbreviation long after the original meaning has faded. The merger with INOX produced a double name, PVR INOX, and some people still say only PVR when they mean any multiplex, much as people say Xerox for photocopying.
Reading the formats on a ticket
A PVR or INOX app lists more than a film name and a time. You will see labels such as IMAX, 4DX, Gold or Luxe, and Playhouse for children's shows. These describe the screen, the seating and the sound, not the film itself. A recliner screen costs more than a regular one, and an IMAX or 4DX show costs more again.
Prices also differ by day and by city. Weekday shows, morning shows and discount days are usually cheaper than weekend evenings. If you are booking for a group, look at the seat map before paying, since the price band is tied to the row, not just to the screen.
The multiplex also changed what is sold alongside the film. The food counter, with popcorn, combos and cold drinks, is a large part of a cinema's income, which is why prices there are higher than at a street stall. Outside food is usually not allowed inside, so eat before you go if the combo price bothers you. The bigger lesson is that a ticket price covers the seat and the screen, not the extras.
If you found PVR on a hospital report instead
Not every PVR is a cinema. In medical notes it can stand for pulmonary vascular resistance, which has to do with how easily blood flows through the lungs. It is the sort of term cardiologists use. In electronics and television, PVR can also mean a personal video recorder, the set-top box feature that records programmes.
Other specialties use the same three letters for other things, so do not guess which one a report means. Ask your doctor to say it in plain words, and do not search your own diagnosis from three letters.
The short version for a quiz: P is Priya, V is Village, R is Roadshow. And if someone asks which came first, the Delhi hall did, nearly two decades before the multiplex.
