From pixel experiments to Toy Story
CGI stands for Computer-Generated Imagery. The early steps were small. Westworld in 1973 used digital image processing in a film, Futureworld in 1976 showed a three-dimensional computer-made hand and face, Tron in 1982 filled the screen with computer worlds, and The Last Starfighter in 1984 used computer graphics for its spaceship scenes instead of physical models.
Jurassic Park in 1993 showed that CGI could look real, and Toy Story in 1995 became the first feature film made entirely with computer animation. The same technology now handles backgrounds, crowds, de-aging and whole environments, often so quietly that viewers do not notice.
The meaning of the word has shifted over time. In the 1970s and 1980s, any computer-made image on film counted as CGI, however simple. Today the term is usually kept for realistic three-dimensional imagery, and the same techniques also drive video games, augmented-reality filters and architectural previews.
How a CGI shot is actually built
Work moves in stages: modelling the geometry, texturing and shading surfaces, rigging a skeleton so a character can move, animating the performance, simulating fire, water and cloth, lighting the scene, rendering the frames and finally compositing everything over the live footage. Each stage usually belongs to a different specialist.
Rendering is the expensive part. Difficult frames can take hours on one machine, so studios use render farms with thousands of machines. Common tools are Maya, 3ds Max, Houdini, Cinema 4D and Nuke, with Blender as a free open-source option and Unreal Engine for real-time work.
Where you meet CGI on a normal day
Films and web series, obviously, but also car and phone advertisements, architecture walkthroughs, product shots, news graphics and the filters in your camera app. Virtual production, where actors perform in front of LED walls that show live computer-generated environments, is now routine on large shoots.
Indian examples are easy to name: the battle sequences in Baahubali, the action set pieces in RRR and the effects in Brahmastra. The cautionary case is Adipurush in 2023, where weak CGI dominated the reaction to the film.
A quick way to spot it is in advertising. The perfectly glossy car on a mountain road, the shampoo bottle spinning in mid-air and the sofa you can place in your own room through a phone camera are usually computer-built images, not photographs.
Can you build a career in it from India?
Studios cluster in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Pune, and Indian facilities work on Hollywood productions as well as Indian ones. DNEG, which has Indian roots in Prime Focus, has won several Academy Awards for visual effects. MPC, Red Chillies VFX and Makuta VFX also appear on credits.
Entry usually runs through a diploma or degree in animation and VFX from institutions such as the IDC School of Design at IIT Bombay, Whistling Woods, MAAC or Arena Animation, followed by a portfolio. Employers look at the showreel first, so a strong reel often counts for more than the certificate.
For a student, free tools are enough to start. Blender can model, animate and render a short scene on an ordinary laptop with a decent graphics card, and many creators publish their first showreel work using it before moving to a studio job.
CGI, VFX and animation are not the same word
Animation is a finished film made of drawn or generated images. VFX, or visual effects, is the wider discipline of creating imagery that is not captured in live-action filming, and CGI is one technique inside it. A full digital dinosaur, a background extension and the removal of a safety wire are all VFX shots, and the first two are CGI.
Films still mix methods on purpose. A physical animatronic in front of the camera is often cheaper, safer and more convincing than a full digital build, which is why Jurassic Park blended puppetry with CGI, and why Indian shoots still use real wires, models and smoke before any pixel is added.
CGI is now the invisible half of the screen, from battle scenes to the product renders in an advertisement. If you want to work in it, pick one discipline, build a reel and let the shots speak first.
