DND Full Form
Do Not Disturb
What does DND stand for? A general term, explained.
DND Full Form in English, letter by letter
DND means Do Not Disturb: the telecom registry that blocks unsolicited marketing calls and SMS, and the silent mode on a smartphone.
DND Full Form in Indian Languages
In India DND means two things: a telecom service against spam calls and a phone mode. Do Not Disturb in six Indian languages is shown below.
Two Meanings of DND in India
DND stands for Do Not Disturb. In India it is most often used for the telecom facility that tells your operator not to send unsolicited commercial calls and messages. TRAI, the telecom regulator, calls this the National Customer Preference Register (NCPR), and people call it DND.
The same letters also name the mode on your phone that silences calls and notifications. One stops telemarketers, the other stops your group chats. Many people mix the two up.
TRAI's system does not ban marketing completely. It lets you choose, and companies are supposed to avoid numbers that are on the register.
How to Register for DND
SMS START 0 to 1909 to block all promotional messages and calls. To block only some categories, send START followed by a number, for example START 1 for banking, insurance and financial products, START 2 for real estate, START 3 for education, START 4 for health, START 5 for consumer goods and automobiles, START 6 for communication, broadcasting, entertainment and IT, and START 7 for tourism and leisure. Send STOP 0 to cancel.
You can also register through your operator's app or website or by calling 1909. The registration is supposed to take effect within a few days, and it remains if you port your number to another operator.
What DND Does Not Block
DND is meant for commercial promotions. It does not stop the OTP from your bank, a delivery update, a bill reminder or an alert on a service you use. These are transactional or service messages. Promotional calls and SMS are allowed only from 9 am to 9 pm for those who have not opted out.
Government messages and emergency alerts also pass through. If promotional messages still arrive after you registered, a telemarketer may be breaking the rules, which you can report.
Reporting Spam and Fraud
Forward a spam SMS to 1909 or report it through your operator's app, which allows TRAI to act on the sender. Telemarketers must register their sender names (headers) and message templates on a distributed ledger system, which makes it harder to spoof them. TRAI has also told telemarketers to use designated number series, with promotional calls on the 140 series and service or transactional calls on the 160 series, so an ordinary ten-digit mobile number calling to sell something is a red flag.
For fraud calls and messages, the Department of Telecommunications runs the Sanchar Saathi portal, which has the Chakshu facility for reporting suspected fraud communications. DND is for marketing, while Chakshu is for someone pretending to be your bank.
Do Not Disturb Mode on iPhone and Android
On an iPhone, Do Not Disturb is part of Focus. You can schedule it for sleeping hours, allow calls from selected contacts, and allow a repeated call from the same number to come through. Android's Do Not Disturb has similar options: schedules, priority contacts and exceptions for alarms.
This mode works on your device, so app notifications such as WhatsApp are silenced too. It holds notifications until you look, and does nothing to stop messages arriving.
Use both. Register with the telecom DND once, and schedule the phone's Do Not Disturb mode for sleep and work hours. Together they handle most of the noise.
