RJD Full Form in Indian Languages
In Bihar politics the abbreviation RJD means Rashtriya Janata Dal, the party founded by Lalu Prasad Yadav in 1997 and identified by its lantern symbol. Here is the party's history, its base and where it stands now, with the name in six Indian languages.
RJD full form and its founding
RJD stands for Rashtriya Janata Dal, a name that translates roughly as National People's Party. Lalu Prasad Yadav founded it on 5 July 1997 after leaving the Janata Dal, and the Election Commission of India allotted it the lantern symbol.
The party's heartland is Bihar, with a smaller presence in Jharkhand, where it has been a junior partner in coalition governments. Its flags and campaign material are built around the lantern, and Lalu's rallies have carried the same imagery for nearly three decades.
The RJD describes itself as a party of backward classes, Dalits and minorities. In practice its core vote has rested on Yadavs and Muslims, with support from other backward and Dalit groups, a combination that shaped caste-based politics in Bihar from the 1990s.
Lalu Prasad Yadav has been the party's national president since the founding, which his critics raise whenever the party is described as a family outfit.
The years in power, 1997 to 2005
Lalu Prasad Yadav became chief minister of Bihar in 1990 as part of the Janata Dal. When the fodder scam case reached him in 1997 and he had to step down, he handed the chair to his wife Rabri Devi, who became chief minister in July that year.
The fodder scam concerned fake bills for animal husbandry supplies drawn from treasuries across Bihar, exposed in raids in early 1996 and then taken up by the CBI. In September 2013 a special court convicted Lalu in one of the cases, and he was disqualified from the Lok Sabha as a result.
The RJD governed Bihar until 2005, when an alliance of the Janata Dal (United) and the BJP won the assembly election. The party then spent a decade in opposition before returning as the largest party in the 2015 Bihar election.
The recent electoral record
In the 2015 assembly election the RJD won 80 of Bihar's 243 seats, the largest tally of any party, and joined a government with the JD(U) and the Congress. That alliance broke in 2017 and the party went back to opposition.
In 2020 the RJD was again the single largest party with 75 seats, though the NDA formed the government. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections the INDIA bloc won 9 of the state's 40 seats, with the RJD as its largest partner in Bihar.
The 2025 assembly election was a heavy setback. The NDA won a large majority, and the RJD fell to about 25 seats, though it still polled the highest single-party vote share, at around 23 per cent. First-past-the-post seats follow alliances and local arithmetic more than raw vote totals, which is why the party can lead in votes and still lose badly.
Tejashwi Yadav, Lalu's younger son, leads the party in the assembly and has been its public face as leader of the opposition and chief ministerial candidate. The family's role in the party is a regular point of attack from its rivals.
How the RJD fits into national alliances
National parties have needed Bihar's seats, so the RJD has shifted partners: the Congress and the Left in the UPA years, the JD(U) in 2015, and the Congress and other opposition parties in the INDIA bloc from 2023.
Alliance arithmetic explains the party's influence. In a state where the Yadav and Muslim vote is decisive, a party with a stable base of that size can change the outcome of many seats, which is why every national formation negotiates with it.
Bihar sends 40 members to the Lok Sabha and has 243 assembly seats, so state results feed into national coalition talks every five years.
Following RJD news and checking claims
Election results and symbols are recorded by the Election Commission of India. Its results portal and the candidate affidavits filed with nominations are the primary source for details such as assets, education and pending cases.
When a claim about vote share or seats circulates on social media, check it against the commission's published results rather than a party statement. Vote share and seat count often tell different stories, and a headline that quotes only one of them can mislead.
The RJD, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, remains shorthand for Bihar's caste-based electoral arithmetic. For current candidates, symbols and results, the Election Commission's results portal is the place to check.
