Delhi is a slightly different case. Its buses run under the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), a city undertaking, not a state road transport corporation, though people often group it with the rest.

How they are funded, and why the money is always tight

A corporation buys buses, hires drivers and maintenance staff, and earns from fares. Cross-subsidy does the rest. Busy intercity routes help pay for hill and village services that no private operator will take on, while state governments reimburse concessions such as student passes and senior citizen travel.

The pressure does not let up. Diesel prices swing, private operators take the profitable routes, and fare hikes are politically hard to announce. Most state corporations therefore run at an operating loss and depend on government support, though a few have decent years when freight and tourist traffic are strong.

Free travel schemes for women introduced in several states in recent years have raised ridership, but they also raise the amount the state must reimburse the corporation. How well that reimbursement arrives decides whether new buses and salaries are on time.

When a fare rises, it usually comes through a state order and is published on the corporation's website and at depots. If a conductor asks for more than the ticket price, ask for a printed ticket and report it to the depot manager.

Who still depends on them

For a lot of India the state bus is not nostalgia, it is the only option. Students going home for a weekend, migrant workers returning to their villages, hill towns that no train reaches, districts connected by nothing else. Fares are published, routes are fixed and conductors know every bend on the road.

Private operators and app-based cabs have made some state services feel slow. But during floods, strikes or a festival rush, the district administration still uses state buses to move people, because nobody else has the fleet or the route network to do it.

For everyday use, most corporations now offer online booking, seat selection and live tracking on their apps and websites. Booking a seat early on festival routes such as Diwali and Sankranti is worth doing, since special services are added but fill fast.

The other RTC: real time clock

In computing, RTC means real time clock, a small battery-backed chip on the motherboard that keeps the date and time running even when the machine is switched off. That is why your laptop still knows the correct day after a full shutdown.
