NDA Full Form in Indian Languages
NDA most often means National Defence Academy. In news and politics it means National Democratic Alliance, and in offices it means Non-Disclosure Agreement.
Three NDAs, and which one you probably mean
If you are a Class 12 student or a parent, NDA means the National Defence Academy. If you are reading election news, it means the National Democratic Alliance. If a company has just sent you a document to sign before your first day, it is a Non-Disclosure Agreement.
All three are common in India, so the context around the word decides it. This page starts with the academy and then covers the other two.
The academy at Khadakwasla
The National Defence Academy is the joint defence academy of the Indian Armed Forces. Cadets of the Army, Navy and Air Force train here together first, and then move to their own service academies for further training before commissioning. It is in Khadakwasla, about 17 km from Pune city in Maharashtra, near Khadakwasla Lake and below Sinhagad Fort.
The idea goes back to the end of World War II, when a committee led by Field Marshal Claude Auchinleck recommended a joint services academy. After independence the government acted on that recommendation. The foundation stone was laid by Jawaharlal Nehru on 6 October 1949, and the academy was commissioned on 7 December 1954.
It is often described as the world's first tri-service academy. Its graduates include several service chiefs and gallantry award winners, which is why so many school students keep the NDA as a dream from Class 9 onwards.
How people actually get in
Entry is through the NDA and Naval Academy examination held by the Union Public Service Commission, usually twice a year. If you clear the written paper, you are called for an interview with the Services Selection Board. The SSB tests personality and officer-like qualities over several days, not just marks.
Unmarried candidates who have passed or are appearing in class 12 can apply, with the subject requirements depending on the wing: Army wing candidates can come from any stream, while Air Force and Naval wings ask for physics and mathematics. Age limits, vacancies and exam dates change, so read the latest UPSC notification instead of trusting coaching-centre posters.
Since the Supreme Court order of August 2021, women candidates can also appear for the entrance exam.
Life as a cadet
Cadets spend three years at the academy, with a mix of academics and military training. Those who join the Army, Navy or Air Force study for a degree in arts, science or computer science alongside drill, physical training, horse riding, swimming and outdoor camps.
After the academy, Army cadets go to the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Naval cadets to the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala, and Air Force cadets to the Air Force Academy at Dundigal for the next stage of training. Check the exact pathway on the official defence recruitment pages.
Preparation usually begins in class 11 or earlier. The written paper has a mathematics section and a general ability section that covers English, general knowledge and science. Many aspirants join a school or coaching class that focuses on the NDA, but the syllabus is public, and previous question papers on the UPSC website are the best practice material. Physical fitness matters, so start running and basic exercises early.
NDA the political alliance
National Democratic Alliance is the coalition of parties led by the BJP. It was formed in 1998, and when a news anchor says the NDA government, this is the group they mean. Searches like NDA full form BJP or NDA full form in politics are about this meaning.
Do not confuse it with the INDIA bloc or the older UPA. Those are other groupings, and each has its own list of member parties that changes after elections.
NDA in an office or startup
A Non-Disclosure Agreement is a legal contract in which one side promises not to share certain information. Employers, clients and investors use it to protect client lists, product plans, source code and prices.
Before signing, check what counts as confidential, how long the promise lasts and what happens if it is broken. This is an explanation of the term, not legal advice, so a lawyer is the right person to ask about a clause you do not understand.
Short version for exam answers: NDA is National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Pune, commissioned on 7 December 1954. For politics write National Democratic Alliance, and for an office document write Non-Disclosure Agreement.
