How ICICI became a bank

The Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India, or ICICI, was set up in 1955 as a development finance institution. Indian industry, the Government of India and the World Bank backed it to provide long-term credit to companies that could not raise money easily. For decades it financed factories, power projects and exporters.

ICICI Bank was created in 1994 as a banking subsidiary. In 2002 the parent company merged into the bank in a reverse merger, which made ICICI Bank one of India's first universal banks, offering commercial and investment banking under one roof. The old development-institution name stayed as the letters on every branch.

So the acronym describes two eras: an institution that funded Indian industry, and a bank that runs savings accounts, cards and loans for households.

ICICI Bank products and services

The bank serves retail, NRI and corporate customers.

Personal banking

Savings and current accounts, fixed and recurring deposits, home, auto, personal and education loans, and credit cards.

NRI and international banking

NRE and NRO accounts, remittances in both directions, foreign currency accounts and investment options for Non-Resident Indians.

Digital platforms

The iMobile Pay app, internet banking, a wallet called Pockets, ICICI Direct for trading and mutual funds, and payment solutions for merchants.

Digital banking at ICICI Bank

ICICI Bank was an early user of video KYC for paperless account opening. Its iMobile Pay app covers a wide range of services, including UPI payments and bill payments, and it can be used even by people who do not hold an ICICI account.

The bank uses artificial intelligence for fraud checks and customer support, including its iPal chat assistant. The result is that most routine tasks can be done without visiting a branch, though cash deposits and some documentation still need one.

Where ICICI Bank operates outside India

ICICI Bank has banking subsidiaries in the United Kingdom and Canada. It also has branches in places such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai (at the Dubai International Financial Centre), Bahrain and the United States, according to its annual filings, though the list changes over time.

These operations focus on NRI banking, trade finance and corporate banking. The overseas network matters mostly to people who move between countries, such as Indians working in the UAE, who send money home or hold accounts in both places.

ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank compared

ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank are the two largest private sector banks in India by assets. Their products overlap heavily, so the choice for a customer usually comes down to the branch nearby, the fees on a particular account, the interest on deposits and the home loan rate on offer.

Compare the current rates and charges on each bank's website and read the terms before opening an account. Both are regulated by the RBI.

Another point is service quality. Look at how quickly each bank resolves complaints, how easy it is to reach a human on the phone, and whether the app works well on your phone. If a complaint is not resolved by the bank, you can escalate it to the RBI's banking ombudsman scheme.

ICICI Foundation and community work

The bank's CSR work is carried out through ICICI Foundation and related programmes. They cover education, skill development, healthcare and livelihoods. The ICICI Academy for Skills trains young people for jobs, and the bank reports its social spending in its annual report.

Opening an account: what you usually need

To open a savings account you generally need proof of identity and address, usually Aadhaar, along with a PAN or Form 60, a recent photograph and a mobile number for verification. The bank can complete this at a branch or through video KYC online.

Before you sign, read the account type carefully. Savings accounts differ in minimum balance rules, charges on cash handling and debit card fees, and these change from time to time. Ask for the current schedule of charges, and note the nominee details, since a nominee makes it easier for family to claim the balance later.

ICICI's path from a 1955 credit institution to a technology-led universal bank follows the opening up of Indian finance. For customers today, the letters on the branch stand for a wide product range that is mostly available on an app.
