PNR Full Form
Passenger Name Record
What does PNR stand for? A transport term, explained.
PNR Full Form in English, letter by letter
PNR is the record a railway or airline creates for a booking: a ten-digit number on Indian train tickets, a six-character code on flights.
PNR Full Form in Indian Languages
The ten digits above the passenger list on a train ticket, or the six characters on a boarding pass, are both a PNR. Here is Passenger Name Record in six Indian languages, and how to read it.
What a PNR Holds
The PNR full form is Passenger Name Record, the record a railway or airline system creates the moment a booking is made. It stores passenger names, journey segments, contact details, fare and ticketing information, seats, baggage and special requests such as a meal or a wheelchair.
One PNR can carry several passengers travelling together, up to six on a single Indian Railways booking and four on a Tatkal booking, which is why a family booking sits under one number.
On Indian Railways tickets the PNR is the ten-digit number printed above the passenger details. Airlines use a record locator instead, usually six characters generated by the reservation system in use, such as Amadeus, Sabre or Galileo.
Reading an Indian Railways PNR Status
Three outcomes matter. CNF means confirmed, with a coach and berth either printed or assigned. RAC means reservation against cancellation, where two passengers share a berth until charts are finalised. WL means waitlisted, with no berth yet.
Waitlists are ranked. GNWL is the general list for the train's origin station and usually clears fastest. RLWL is the remote location list and moves slower, and PQWL belongs to a pooled quota and is the slowest to move.
Check the status on the IRCTC app or website, on the National Train Enquiry System, or through the 139 railway helpline. If a waitlisted e-ticket is still unconfirmed after chart preparation, it is cancelled automatically and the fare refunded.
Charts are prepared some hours before departure, and reservations close at that point, so on a busy train a last-minute booking may simply not be possible.
RAC is better than WL, because an RAC passenger is assured of at least a seat and may later be given a full berth.
Why an Airline PNR Is Different
An airline PNR is not your ticket number. The PNR is the reservation file, while the e-ticket number is a 13-digit string beginning with the airline's own code. Check-in and baggage tags are handled against the PNR.
Codeshare flights keep a single PNR across segments, which is why one booking can show flights sold by two carriers. Records move between agents and airlines using standard messaging, which is why changes show up quickly.
On trains, a waitlist that clears changes nothing else about the number. The same ten digits now show CNF with a coach and berth against your name, from booking through to the journey.
Who Else Gets to See It
Airlines must send advance passenger information to border agencies before international departures. The European Union's PNR Directive of 2016 goes further, requiring carriers to pass booking data to member states' units for security screening.
That is the trade of modern travel: your name, itinerary and contact details are shared by design, which is also why airlines and agents ask for identification long before departure.
Practical Habits Around a PNR
Do not post PNR screenshots online. The number can be used to look up status details of your journey on enquiry channels, and it ties to your name on the ticket, so avoid sharing it with strangers or in large groups.
Keep the number until the journey ends and any refund arrives. It is the reference for changes, complaints and claims, and the first thing the railway or airline will ask for.
If you cannot find it, look in the booking confirmation SMS and email, or in the booking history of the app where you booked. A ticket bought through an agent is worth confirming on the official app too, so you know the status is real.
If you book through an agent, ask for the PNR as soon as payment is made and check it on the IRCTC app within a few minutes. A genuine booking will show up there.
Passenger Name Record is the single string, ten digits on an Indian train ticket and six characters on a boarding pass, that carries a traveller's name, route and ticketing data from booking to arrival. Keep it safe, and keep it handy until the journey is over.
PNR Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of PNR?
PNR stands for Passenger Name Record, the record holding a traveller's name, itinerary and ticketing details. In India it appears as a ten-digit number on train tickets, while airlines use a six-character record locator.
What is the difference between a PNR and a ticket number?
The PNR identifies the booking and can cover several passengers and segments. An airline e-ticket number is a 13-digit string tied to a single issue of a ticket, starting with the airline's code, and refunds are tracked against it.
How do I check my train PNR status?
Use the IRCTC app or website, the National Train Enquiry System, or call the 139 helpline, and enter the ten-digit number. The result shows CNF for confirmed, RAC for a shared berth, or WL for waitlisted.
What do GNWL, RLWL and PQWL mean?
They are waitlist types. GNWL is the general waiting list from the origin station and clears first, RLWL is for remote intermediate stations and moves slower, and PQWL covers a pooled quota and moves the least.
Is it safe to share my PNR number?
Not widely. Anyone with the number can check the journey status, and it is linked to your name on the ticket. Avoid posting screenshots in groups or on social media, and share it only with the railway, airline or your agent.
How many passengers can be on one PNR?
Up to six on a normal Indian Railways booking and four on a Tatkal booking. If your group is larger, make a second booking, which gives a second PNR.
