What the LMV category covers

A Light Motor Vehicle is a motor vehicle whose gross vehicle weight does not exceed 7,500 kg. In practice that means the cars, jeeps, pickup vans, delivery vans and taxis most Indians drive. Anything heavier crosses into the medium and heavy categories.

Gross vehicle weight is the manufacturer's rated maximum: the vehicle's own weight plus passengers and payload. Almost every Indian car qualifies, and even a large MPV or small pickup stays inside the line. It is larger goods carriers and buses that leave the LMV category.

Number plates tell you how a vehicle is registered, not its weight class. Private vehicles carry white plates with black letters, commercial vehicles yellow plates with black letters, and self-drive rental cars black plates with yellow letters. Electric vehicles carry green plates.

Getting an LMV driving licence

You must be at least 18 to hold a licence for a private LMV. Apply through the state transport portal with age proof, address proof, photographs and Form 1, a self-declaration of physical fitness. A learner's licence comes first and is valid for six months.

You can sit for the permanent test after 30 days of holding the learner's licence. The test is conducted at the RTO, often on a track with sensors that replaced the older figure-eight and gradient sections. Passing puts LMV on your licence.

Applicants above 40, and anyone applying for a transport licence, also need a medical certificate on Form 1A from a registered doctor. Documents and fees differ slightly by state, so use your state transport portal for the current list.

A Supreme Court Constitution Bench ruled on 6 November 2024 that a holder of an LMV licence may drive a transport vehicle up to 7,500 kg without a separate endorsement. Extra requirements still apply for e-carts, e-rickshaws and vehicles carrying hazardous goods, and for anything above 7,500 kg.

LMV, MCWG and HMV: knowing the boundaries

Two-wheelers are governed by the MCWG and MCWOG categories, not LMV. At the other end, vehicles between 7,500 kg and 12,000 kg are medium vehicles, and anything above 12,000 kg is heavy. A bus or a multi-axle truck needs an HMV licence that LMV does not cover.

There is also an age rule for commercial driving. A private LMV licence needs you to be 18, but a licence to drive a transport vehicle has historically required completing 20 years, with some state-level exceptions. Check the current rule with your RTO before applying.

Driving for hire carries extra requirements on the vehicle side. The car itself must be registered as a transport vehicle with a yellow plate, a driver working a taxi usually needs a badge issued by the RTO, and commercial insurance and a permit are compulsory. A private LMV driver needs none of these to drive to work.

Why the category matters beyond the licence

Insurance premiums, road tax, permit rules and the kind of driving test you face all key off the LMV classification and the vehicle's registration type. A cab driver needs the right licence, usually a badge from the RTO, and a permit before carrying passengers for fare.

The term also appears on RTO forms, insurance papers and in exam questions on transport rules. If a question asks which licence class allows you to drive a car or a taxi within 7,500 kg, LMV is the answer.

Insurance pricing follows the registration split. A private-car policy costs less than a commercial one for an identical car, because transport vehicles cover more kilometres and carry more risk. Misdeclaring how the car is used can let an insurer dispute a claim, so be honest about its use.

Licence validity and renewal

A licence to drive a non-transport vehicle is valid for 20 years from issue or until the holder turns 40, whichever comes first. After 40 it is issued for five-year periods up to age 50, and for shorter periods after that.

Licences for transport vehicles are valid for a maximum of three years, and a hazardous-goods endorsement for one year. You can renew up to a year before expiry, and a renewal after the grace period can attract a fee and, in some cases, a fresh test. Most renewals can be started online through the transport department's portal.

LMV is the paperwork behind almost every car journey in India. Get the category right at the RTO and keep the licence current. Note that a yellow plate brings extra permit and insurance requirements.

LMV Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of LMV?

LMV stands for Light Motor Vehicle, the category covering cars, jeeps, taxis and vans with a gross vehicle weight up to 7,500 kg. It is the licence class printed on most Indian car drivers' licences.

What is the age limit for an LMV licence?

18 years for a private LMV licence. For a licence to drive a transport vehicle for hire, the Motor Vehicles Act has traditionally required the applicant to have completed 20 years; confirm the current rule with your RTO.

What is the difference between LMV and HMV?

LMV covers vehicles up to 7,500 kg gross weight. Heavy motor vehicles are those above 12,000 kg, such as buses and multi-axle trucks, and need a separate HMV licence. Medium vehicles sit between 7,500 and 12,000 kg.

Does an LMV licence cover motorcycles?

No. Two-wheelers need an MCWG (with gear) or MCWOG (without gear) licence. An LMV licence authorises light four-wheeled vehicles only.

How long is an LMV licence valid?

A non-transport licence is valid for 20 years from issue or until the holder turns 40, whichever is earlier, and then for shorter renewals. Licences for transport vehicles are issued for up to three years.

Can an LMV licence holder drive a taxi?

Since the Supreme Court's November 2024 ruling, an LMV licence is enough to drive a transport vehicle up to 7,500 kg without a separate endorsement. The vehicle still needs commercial registration, a permit and insurance, and local badge rules may apply.
