CNF on a train ticket: what a confirmed status means
In railway reservation status, CNF stands for Confirmed. A ticket booked directly as CNF shows the coach and berth on the ticket, for example a coach and seat number. When a waitlisted ticket moves up and the status turns to CNF, the berth is allotted to you and the journey can be made.
The statuses beside it matter. WL means waitlisted, RAC means a shared berth with a confirmed seat but no full berth yet, and after the chart is prepared an e-ticket still on the waiting list is cancelled and refunded automatically instead of being carried forward.
For a ticket that was waitlisted and later confirmed, the coach and berth number may show only once the reservation chart is prepared, a few hours before departure, so check the PNR status again at that time.
CNF in shipping: Cost and Freight, an Incoterm
In international trade, CNF is the older shorthand for Cost and Freight, published in the Incoterms as CFR. Under it the seller pays for the goods and the sea freight to the destination port named in the contract. It applies only to sea and inland waterway transport.
The critical point is that cost and risk change hands in different places. Risk passes to the buyer once the goods are loaded on board at the origin port, so damage during the voyage is the buyer's problem even though the seller paid the freight.
Insurance is not included. A buyer on CNF terms who wants cover must arrange a marine policy, which is exactly what the CIF term adds on top of CFR.
What an Indian importer still pays on a CNF Mumbai quote
A price quoted as CNF Mumbai or CNF Nhava Sheva covers the goods and the freight to that port and nothing further. The importer still pays marine insurance if wanted, customs duty, IGST on the imported goods, terminal handling charges and inland transport to the warehouse.
In India, customs duty is worked out on the assessable value, which is the CIF value plus a landing charge of 1 per cent. Basic customs duty and any surcharge are added to it, and IGST is then charged on the total. The exact rates depend on the product, so a customs broker should give a landed-cost estimate before the order.
That is why experienced Indian buyers also compare quotes on an FOB basis, where the freight component is visible and can be tendered separately. Freight rates swing sharply, so a CNF quotation is usually valid only for a stated number of days.
Choosing between CFR, CIF and FOB
FOB shifts the freight cost to the buyer along with the risk, which suits importers who hold their own shipping contracts. CIF bundles cost, freight and a minimum insurance cover, which suits buyers who want the seller to handle the paperwork end to end.
Whatever term is used, it must be followed by a named port. A bare CNF on a purchase order is ambiguous and a frequent source of disputes between Indian importers and overseas suppliers.
Customs expects the invoice, packing list and bill of lading to match the stated term, and a mismatch usually draws a query at clearance.
CNF agent in the pharma and FMCG trade
In Indian distribution, a CNF (more often written C&F) agent is a Carrying and Forwarding agent. A company appoints one in each region to receive stock from the factory, warehouse it and send it on to stockists and distributors. Pharma and FMCG job listings for 'CNF manager' refer to this role.
It is a third meaning for the same letters, and it has no link with the shipping term, so read the advertisement before answering.
Common mistakes on both sides of CNF
On shipping documents the commonest error is assuming that CNF includes duty or insurance, which leads to short payment at the port. On railway tickets the error is assuming that a waitlist number that is moving is as good as CNF. It is not until the status changes.
Reading the full sentence around the letters solves both: 'CNF Nhava Sheva' is a trade term, and 'status CNF' is a reservation.
