What PFA means in an email

PFA stands for Please Find Attached. It introduces a file you have added to an email or letter. You will see it in nearly every Indian office: 'PFA the invoice', 'PFA the requested documents', 'PFA for your reference'.

The phrase comes from formal business letters, where enclosures were announced at the end of the letter. It stuck in email and, in India especially, it is still a habit in government and corporate writing. People write it in the subject line or at the start of a message, usually as a polite way of saying 'the file is attached'.

Why style guides do not like it

Plain-English writers object to 'please find attached' for two reasons. It is stiff, because 'find' is an instruction left over from paper correspondence, and it tells the reader nothing about the file. Compare 'PFA the contract' with 'I have attached the signed contract; the clause we discussed is on page 3.' The second version does more in the same space.

There is also a practical problem. An email that says only 'PFA' forces the reader to open the attachment to learn what is expected, which wastes a little time on every message. It is not an error, only a missed chance to be clear.

What to write instead

Short alternatives work better. 'I have attached the signed contract' names the file and states the action in one clause. 'Attached is the report' works for a single document, and 'The invoice is attached' is fine when the file name is descriptive.

Two habits help more than the wording. Name the file properly: Invoice_Mar2026.pdf is better than scan003.pdf, especially for a PDF. And say in the body what you want done with the file and by when. Keep PFA if your workplace expects it, but do not let it be the whole sentence.

Other office phrases worth a second look

None of these are mistakes. They are set phrases from older institutional writing, and replacing them costs nothing while making the message shorter and easier to answer.

'Kindly do the needful' is clearer if you say what the needful is. 'Please revert back at the earliest' becomes 'Could you confirm by Thursday?' 'As per our telephonic conversation' becomes 'As we discussed yesterday.' 'Apologies for the delayed revert' becomes 'Sorry for the delay; here is the update.'

Note too that 'revert' in Indian office English usually means 'reply'. In standard British and American English it means 'go back to a previous state', so a reader outside India may be confused by it.

A short exercise shows the point. Take the email 'Dear Sir, PFA the document and do the needful.' A better version is: 'Dear Mr Rao, I have attached the signed lease agreement for your review. Could you confirm the rent clause by Friday?' It is a few words longer but removes two back-and-forth emails. The test of a good attachment line is whether the reader can act on it without opening the file first.

Other meanings of PFA

In India PFA also appears as the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954, the law on food safety that was replaced by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which created the FSSAI. Old exam papers and textbooks still mention it.

PFA is also used as the short name of People for Animals, an animal welfare NGO founded by Maneka Gandhi, and of the Professional Footballers' Association in the United Kingdom. In email, however, PFA means Please Find Attached.

PFA will last as long as office habit does. Use it if your workplace expects it, but name the file and state the action. One more tip: put the deadline in the body, not in the attachment. 'Attached is the revised quotation, valid until 30 April' answers the two questions a reader asks before finishing the first line.

PFA Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of PFA?

Please Find Attached. It is an email phrase telling the reader that a document has been attached to the message.

Is PFA outdated?

Many style guides call it dated, since 'please find' comes from paper letters. It is still widely used and fully understood in Indian offices, so it is a matter of style and not an error.

What should I write instead of PFA?

'I have attached the signed contract' or 'Attached is the report'. Both name the file and read naturally. Add what you need the reader to do and by when.

Does PFA mean anything else?

Yes. It also stands for the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (1954, replaced in 2006), People for Animals, and the Professional Footballers' Association. In email, it means Please Find Attached.

Is it correct to write 'PFA' in the subject line?

It is understood, but it tells the reader nothing about the content. A subject such as 'Invoice for March, attached' is more useful and easier to search for later.

Is 'please find attached' grammatically correct?

Yes. It is a formal imperative, short for 'please find the attached document'. The objection to it is about tone and usefulness, not grammar.
