What Turnaround Time means
Turnaround Time is the time between receiving something (an application, a sample, a complaint, a machine for repair) and returning it finished. It is often written as two words, turn around time, and both forms are seen in Indian business use.
A precise definition matters more than the words. If you count only working hours, a ten-hour TAT may fit in one working day. If you count clock hours, it does not. Two teams that disagree on the start and end points will report the same process with two different numbers.
TAT, lead time and cycle time
Lead time is the customer's view: from placing an order to receiving it. Cycle time is the inside view: how long one unit takes at one step. TAT is usually used for a single service request, such as a loan file, a lab sample or a complaint, and is measured per item.
The terms get confused in real arguments. A bank can quote a two-day TAT for a loan file while the customer feels a five-day wait, because document checking, credit appraisal and payout sit in different queues with different owners.
Where Indians meet TAT every month
Banks quote TAT for cheque clearing, card issue and loan sanction. The Cheque Truncation System shortened clearing for cheques by moving images instead of paper. The Reserve Bank's complaint rules expect a bank to resolve a customer's complaint within a set period, after which the customer can approach the Reserve Bank's ombudsman.
Health insurers publish TATs for cashless pre-approval and claim settlement under timelines set by the insurance regulator. Courier firms show delivery TAT by PIN code, and diagnostic labs quote a TAT for each test, with routine blood tests often reported within a day.
In IT and BPO contracts, TAT sits inside the service-level agreement: a critical ticket may carry a four-hour TAT and a routine query two working days. Such contracts specify whether the clock runs on business hours or continuously, because that decides whether a weekend counts against the vendor.
Measuring TAT honestly
An average can hide a long tail. Operations teams report the 90th or 95th percentile alongside it, so a few five-day delays cannot hide behind a two-day mean. The share of requests that exceed the promised TAT, the breach rate under an SLA, is the number customers actually feel.
TAT improves by removing waits, not by rushing work: fewer handoffs, approvals done in batches during the day, and enough staff in the queue that holds up everything after it. Making the fastest step twice as fast does nothing if the slowest step stays the same.
A worked example from a hospital laboratory
A patient gives a blood sample at 9 a.m. The lab receives it at 10, runs it by 3 p.m., and the doctor sees the report at 5 p.m. Measured from collection to report, the TAT is eight hours. Measured from the lab receiving the sample, it is seven hours. The hospital may count from the order time, which could be even earlier.
Each choice is valid, but they cannot be mixed. That is why a good TAT target says exactly which two timestamps it measures.
The other meaning of TAT
In psychology, TAT is the Thematic Apperception Test, a projective personality test from 1935 in which a person writes stories about ambiguous pictures. It was developed by Henry Murray and Christiana Morgan. In medicine TAT can also mean tetanus antitoxin.
A psychology paper that mentions TAT is not talking about shipping, and a service contract that mentions it is not talking about personality.
