What does IIM stand for? A education term, explained.
IIM Full Form in English, letter by letter
IIM stands for Indian Institute of Management, the government-funded business schools known for the CAT entrance test and two-year PGP programmes.
IIM Full Form in Indian Languages
IIM is short for Indian Institute of Management, the group of public business schools that remain a common route into senior corporate roles in India.
What the IIM full form covers
IIM stands for Indian Institute of Management. It is the collective name for more than twenty publicly funded management schools, now governed by the IIM Act, 2017.
They are best known for the two-year flagship programme, called PGP or PGDM depending on the campus. Every IIM also runs a doctoral programme (FPM or PhD), one-year courses for working executives and short corporate programmes.
The first year at most campuses follows a similar plan: economics, accounting, statistics, marketing, operations and organisational behaviour, with specialisations in the second year.
How the first campuses started
IIM Calcutta opened in 1961 with help from MIT's Sloan School, and IIM Ahmedabad opened the same year with help from Harvard Business School. IIM Bangalore followed in 1973 and IIM Lucknow in 1984. IIM Kozhikode and IIM Indore came in 1996.
A larger wave through the 2000s and 2010s added Shillong, Ranchi, Rohtak, Raipur, Tiruchirappalli, Udaipur, Nagpur, Visakhapatnam, Kashipur, Amritsar, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Jammu and Bodh Gaya. NITIE Mumbai was renamed IIM Mumbai in 2023, and a further campus at Guwahati was approved in 2025. Note that IIT Kharagpur's business school is not an IIM.
The IIM Act, 2017 made the institutes autonomous and allowed them to award degrees, ending decades in which they could grant only diplomas.
Faculty depth and alumni strength still differ a lot between campuses. The oldest ones behave like established business schools, while the newest are still building permanent faculty.
Getting in: CAT, IPMAT and executive programmes
The Common Admission Test is the main door to the two-year programme. One IIM conducts it each year on rotation, as a computer-based test in November, with three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability.
Lakhs of candidates register each year. Interview calls depend on the CAT score plus Class 10 and 12 marks, graduation marks, work experience and diversity factors, so even a very high percentile does not guarantee a call. Each IIM publishes its own weightage, so read the admission brochure of every campus you apply to.
School-leavers can join the five-year integrated programme in management at IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak through IPMAT, and at IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu through JIPMAT. Working professionals look at the one-year executive programmes, which usually ask for several years of experience and use the GMAT, GRE or CAT.
Preparation usually takes several months. Most candidates practise sectional mock tests, build speed in reading comprehension and data interpretation, and review their mistakes after each test. Sitting one or two mocks under exam conditions each week is more useful than buying many books. Keep a note of the cut-offs each IIM publishes for sections, because a low score in one section can rule you out even with a high overall percentile.
Placements, fees and the real cost
Placement season is the number everyone watches. Older campuses draw recruiters from consulting, finance and product companies, and their average packages are among the highest in Indian management education. Check each campus's own placement report, because averages, medians and domestic versus international offers are reported differently.
Summer internships matter nearly as much. A two-month project at the end of the first year often converts into a pre-placement offer, so a large part of a batch can be placed before the final season starts.
The programme is expensive and demanding. Total fees run into tens of lakhs of rupees at the older campuses before hostel and living costs, and the first-year workload is famously heavy. Many students take education loans, so work out the repayment against a realistic first salary before accepting a seat.
Degree, diploma and what it means on paper
Until 2017, IIMs awarded only a postgraduate diploma (PGDM or PGP). Since the Act, many campuses award an MBA degree for the two-year programme while some retain the PGP name.
The label matters mainly in government or academic posts where eligibility rules literally say "degree". In the private sector recruiters look at the campus, your profile and the summer internship more than the wording on the certificate.
If you want an MBA but not an IIM, many other good routes exist, such as XLRI, FMS Delhi, SPJIMR and various university departments. Compare programmes on faculty, placement reports and the quality of the peer group, not only on the brand name.
The IIM family is now much bigger than the two campuses that opened in 1961. CAT is still the common entrance, but campus, programme and fee decide the outcome.

More than twenty. The number has grown with IIM Mumbai (the former NITIE) and a further campus at Guwahati, so check the Ministry of Education list for the current count.
