What the scholarship offers

NMMS stands for National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship. It is a central sector scheme started in 2008 by the Ministry of Education (then the Ministry of Human Resource Development) to support talented students from economically weaker families. It aims to reduce dropouts after class 8.

A selected student receives ₹12,000 a year (₹1,000 a month) for classes 9 to 12 for study in a state government, government-aided or local body school. The 'means' part refers to the family's income, and the 'merit' part to the student's marks and the selection test.

Who is eligible

A candidate must be a regular class 8 student in a state government, government-aided or local body school. Students in Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, Sainik schools and other fully residential or private schools are not eligible.

Parental income from all sources must not exceed ₹3.5 lakh a year, a limit raised from ₹1.5 lakh from 2021-22. A candidate must also have scored at least 55 per cent in class 7 (50 per cent for SC and ST students). Income and category certificates are needed as proof, and states may add their own procedures.

The selection test

Selection is through a state-level examination, conducted by the state's examination authority. The test usually has two parts: the Mental Ability Test, which checks reasoning, and the Scholastic Aptitude Test, which covers school subjects such as science, social science and mathematics.

The number of scholarships is fixed for each state or union territory, so cut-offs vary. A student with the same score may qualify in one state and not in another. Look at the previous year's cut-off for your own state, and check the state notice for exact subjects and dates.

Payment and renewal

The money is paid directly into the student's bank account through direct benefit transfer (DBT). The student needs an account linked with Aadhaar and has to keep the details correct, because a failed transfer can delay the payment.

The scholarship is renewed each year when the student passes the class with the minimum marks the scheme requires and continues in an eligible school. Check the current guidelines for the exact renewal marks, since sources quote different thresholds for the move to class 11. Missing a renewal deadline is a common reason students lose the scholarship.

Schools also play a part: the headmaster or the nodal teacher verifies documents and uploads them. If a school makes a mistake in your child's name, date of birth or bank details, ask for it to be corrected well before the verification date, because later corrections are difficult. Keep the NCERT textbooks of classes 7 and 8 handy during preparation, since the Scholastic Aptitude Test questions follow the standard school syllabus.

How to prepare and apply

The exam is based on the school syllabus, so steady study through classes 7 and 8 covers most of it. The reasoning section needs separate practice, because many students are not used to the question style. Solve previous-year papers from your state.

Applications are usually made through the school, and the school forwards the details to the state authority and the National Scholarship Portal. Ask your class teacher for the notice early, because the dates are set by each state.

Documents to keep ready

Keep a class 7 mark sheet, a caste certificate if claiming the SC or ST relaxation, an income certificate from the competent authority, an Aadhaar card, a bank passbook in the student's name, and a school bonafide certificate. Having these ready saves time when the form opens.

Parents should also know that the scholarship is not a loan and carries no repayment. A student who changes school or state should inform the school and the state nodal officer so that the record moves with them. If your name does not appear in the merit list, check the result sheet before assuming a rejection, because spelling and bank-detail mismatches are common reasons for delay. Apply only through official channels, and never pay anyone to 'guarantee' a scholarship. Students from EWS households should still carry the income certificate the scheme asks for, as other certificates do not replace it.

The NMMS is one of the most practical schemes for keeping a child in school up to class 12. It pays a fixed amount directly to the student, so keep the documents and bank details ready and follow your state's notice for dates.
