What NET qualifies you for

NET stands for National Eligibility Test. It is conducted for eligibility to work as an assistant professor in Indian universities and colleges, and for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) that funds doctoral research. A candidate may qualify for JRF along with assistant professor eligibility, or only for assistant professor eligibility, and the notification also uses NET score for PhD admission.

Assistant professor eligibility is valid for life, so qualifying once removes the need to reappear. JRF carries a time limit, and the award has to be taken up within the period stated in the result notice.

Who can apply

Candidates need a master's degree with at least 55 per cent marks (50 per cent for SC, ST, PwD and certain other categories) from a recognised university. Students in the final year of a master's degree can also apply, provided they complete it within the stated period after the result. Recent notifications also allow some four-year undergraduate graduates for certain purposes, so read the current bulletin.

For JRF there is an upper age limit of 30 years, with relaxations for reserved categories and some other candidates as the notification states. There is no upper age limit for assistant professor eligibility, which is why many working teachers appear for NET.

Exam pattern and subjects

NET is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) twice a year, usually in June and December, as a computer-based test. There are two papers in a single three-hour session. Paper 1 tests teaching and research aptitude, reasoning, comprehension, ICT and general awareness, with 50 questions carrying 100 marks.

Paper 2 is subject-specific, with 100 questions carrying 200 marks, drawn from the candidate's chosen subject. More than eighty subjects are offered, from commerce and history to management and languages. There is no negative marking. Qualification depends on category-wise cut-offs, not a fixed pass mark.

UGC NET vs CSIR NET vs SET

UGC NET, which is what most people mean by NET, covers arts, commerce, management, languages and social sciences. CSIR NET is a separate exam for five science subjects: life sciences, chemical sciences, physical sciences, mathematical sciences, and earth, atmospheric, ocean and planetary sciences. It follows its own pattern.

Several states also conduct a State Eligibility Test (SET) for assistant professor posts, valid within that state or the group of states concerned. For a college lectureship, NET or SET is generally the eligibility gate, though recruitment rules and selection exams differ from state to state.

Do not confuse NET with the college-level entrance tests that share the letters in other contexts. NET for teaching is conducted by the NTA for the UGC, while GATE and other exams serve engineering and technical streams. If you are unsure whether to appear for NET or CSIR NET, look at which subjects your postgraduate degree covers and which exam lists them.

Preparation in practice

For Paper 1, previous-year papers are the best guide, because the question types repeat: teaching aptitude, logical reasoning, data interpretation, higher education and general awareness. Many aspirants give a few weeks to Paper 1 alone, because those marks are quick to gain.

Paper 2 rewards a real grip on the master's syllabus, so your own postgraduate notes are more useful than fresh reading. Take a few full-length mock tests under timed conditions, because the exam is long and pacing matters.

Applying and what comes after the result

Applications are made online during the notified window, with category certificates uploaded where claimed. After the result, qualified candidates receive an e-certificate, and JRF qualifiers receive an award letter. Always follow the official NTA and UGC notice for dates and fees, because these change from cycle to cycle.

If you plan to rely on the score for teaching jobs, keep your marks sheets, degree certificate, category certificate and NET certificate together with scanned copies, because every college asks for them. Remember that NET is an eligibility test and not a job: appointments depend on the university or college recruitment process, which may add an interview or a teaching demonstration. Also compare the eligibility rules of your state's colleges, because some have their own conditions.

NET is the standard eligibility route to a lectureship or research fellowship in Indian higher education. Read the latest NTA bulletin for the pattern, dates and fees before you apply.
