What HCF Means, With a Worked Example

HCF stands for Highest Common Factor, also called the GCD or Greatest Common Divisor: the largest whole number that divides two or more numbers exactly, with nothing left over. For 12 and 18, the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12, and the factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 18. The shared ones are 1, 2, 3 and 6, so the HCF is 6.

A factor is simply a number that divides another exactly. Any two numbers share at least the factor 1. When the HCF of two numbers is 1, the numbers are called coprime, as 9 and 25 are. They share no factor bigger than 1 even though neither is prime.

Three Methods for Finding HCF

Listing factors works for small numbers, as above. Prime factorisation is faster. Break each number into primes and keep the common primes at their lowest power. Since 12 = 2² × 3 and 18 = 2 × 3², the HCF is 2 × 3 = 6. For three numbers, do the same across all of them.

Euclid's division lemma handles large numbers without factorising. Divide the bigger number by the smaller, then keep dividing the previous divisor by the last remainder until the remainder is zero. Take 56 and 98: 98 = 56 × 1 + 42, then 56 = 42 × 1 + 14, then 42 = 14 × 3 + 0. The last non-zero remainder is 14, so the HCF is 14.

Long division is a fourth way taught in some schools, but it is just the Euclid method in a different layout. Pick the method that you can do without mistakes under time pressure.

The HCF Questions Exams Actually Ask

The classic set-up is equal grouping. 24 red, 36 blue and 60 green pens must be packed so that every packet holds the same number of pens of one colour with none left over. The largest possible packet holds HCF(24, 36, 60) = 12 pens. The same logic covers cutting ropes into equal pieces, forming the largest equal rows of students, or paving a floor with the biggest possible square tile.

A related type asks for the largest number that divides several numbers and leaves given remainders. To find it, subtract each remainder from its number and take the HCF of the results. For example, the greatest number that divides 60 and 100 leaving remainders 3 and 4 is the HCF of 57 and 96, which is 3.

For two numbers, HCF × LCM equals the product of the numbers. HCF(15, 20) = 5 and LCM = 60, and 5 × 60 = 300 = 15 × 20. A question that gives you the HCF, the LCM and one number is testing exactly this identity. For fractions, the HCF is the HCF of the numerators divided by the LCM of the denominators.

HCF or LCM? Choosing the Right One

Confusing the two is the commonest mistake in the exam hall. If the question asks for the greatest size, the largest equal group or the biggest number that divides something, it wants the highest common factor. If it asks for the smallest number divisible by the given values, or for when repeating events coincide, it wants the LCM.

HCF also turns up outside the syllabus. Simplifying 84/120 to 7/10 means dividing the numerator and denominator by their HCF of 12. Papers from SSC CGL and CHSL, bank exams, Railway Group D and CBSE class 10 carry HCF and LCM questions nearly every year, usually wrapped in a story about sharing, packing or scheduling.

A quick check helps: the HCF can never be larger than the smallest of the numbers, and the LCM can never be smaller than the largest. If your answer breaks this, recheck.

Common Mistakes and a Quick Practice Set

Students often take all the primes instead of only the common ones, or use the highest power instead of the lowest. For HCF, take common primes at the lowest power. For LCM, take every prime at the highest power. Another slip is forgetting that the HCF of consecutive numbers is always 1.

Try these: HCF of 36 and 48 is 12. HCF of 18, 24 and 30 is 6. HCF of 17 and 29 is 1, so they are coprime. If the HCF of two numbers is 8 and their LCM is 96, and one number is 24, the other is 8 × 96 ÷ 24 = 32.

HCF is one idea with several ways to compute it and one rule to keep it apart from LCM: greatest divisor means HCF, smallest common multiple means LCM. Practise both with word problems and a familiar part of every quantitative paper becomes easy marks.

HCF Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of HCF?

The full form of HCF is Highest Common Factor, the greatest number that divides two or more numbers exactly. It is also called the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). For 12 and 18 the answer is 6.

What is the difference between HCF and LCM?

HCF is the largest number that divides the given numbers, while LCM is the smallest number that all of them divide. Use HCF when a question wants the greatest size or equal grouping, and LCM when it wants the smallest common multiple or the point where cycles meet again.

How do I find the HCF of three numbers?

Find the HCF of the first two numbers, then find the HCF of that result with the third number. You can also use prime factorisation and take the common primes at their lowest power. HCF(24, 36, 60) = 12 because the shared part is 2² × 3.

What does an HCF of 1 mean?

It means the numbers are coprime: they share no factor greater than 1, as with 9 and 25. An HCF of 1 does not make the numbers prime. It only means their factor lists overlap at 1 alone.

What is the relation between HCF and LCM?

For two numbers, HCF × LCM equals the product of the two numbers. If you know the HCF and LCM you can find the product, a favourite shortcut in bank and SSC papers. The identity does not extend directly to three or more numbers.

Is HCF the same as GCD?

Yes. HCF (Highest Common Factor) is the name used in Indian school books and exams. GCD (Greatest Common Divisor) is the name used in many other countries and in computer science. They mean exactly the same thing.
