What a DIG is in charge of
In most states a police range covers three to seven districts, and the Deputy Inspector General posted at the range office supervises them. The DIG reviews investigations, tracks law and order cases, inspects police stations and holds crime review meetings with the Superintendents of Police. The DIG does not run a district, because that is the Superintendent's job, but signs off on how the range works.
The rank is used well beyond state police. The CBI, BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, NDRF and Railway Protection Force all have DIG-rank officers. In the central armed police forces a DIG often heads a sector, a training centre or a recruitment office rather than a group of districts.
Where DIG sits in the ladder
The order in a state is Superintendent of Police, then Deputy Inspector General, then Inspector General, then Additional DGP and DGP. A DIG commands Superintendents and answers to an IG. In official letters the designation is written with the place, as in DIG (Range), Bareilly Range, or DIG (Armed Police).
Commissionerate cities work differently. In Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru the ranks run from Assistant Commissioner of Police through Deputy Commissioner and Additional Commissioner to the Commissioner, so the DIG title is used mainly for range and headquarters posts outside the city system.
When you write to a DIG, the usual form of address is the designation followed by the range, for example Deputy Inspector General of Police, Kolhapur Range. Letters addressed only by name are often delayed because the office, not the officer, receives the post.
How an officer reaches the rank
Most DIGs are Indian Police Service officers. Promotion to DIG normally comes after about 14 to 16 years of service, depending on the batch and the state, through time-bound promotion based on the service record and vacancies. States also promote senior state police service officers into the IPS cadre, and some of them eventually reach DIG too.
There is no separate DIG exam. Candidates take the Civil Services Examination conducted by the UPSC, choose the police service on their rank, train at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad, and then move up through postings. Central armed police forces also fill some DIG posts by promotion of their own officers.
What a DIG does through the year
Expect file work and field visits in roughly equal measure. A DIG sanctions or reviews important investigations, checks charge-sheet progress, inspects police stations and lock-ups, plans security for festivals and VIP movement, and settles disputes between district units.
During elections the range DIG is usually responsible for deploying forces across several districts. When a case spreads across district boundaries, such as a gang operating along a highway, it is often the DIG who coordinates the districts, and who takes the matter up to the IG and DGP if needed.
A worked example: after a jail break or a communal clash in one district, the Superintendent handles the scene and the arrests, while the range DIG visits, reviews the response, asks for a report on lapses and may order an inquiry. Public statements on such days often carry the DIG's name for exactly this reason.
Pay, posting cycles and the parts nobody mentions
A DIG is paid under the central pay matrix applicable to the IPS at that grade, with dearness allowance, housing and transport benefits, and an official vehicle and security. The exact figure changes with the pay commission and the state's rules, so check the current matrix instead of relying on a number quoted online.
The less visible side is the posting cycle. Transfers are frequent, postings may be far from home and public attention is constant. The rank is a recognition of long service as much as a jump in pay.
DIG in the central forces, and not in the Army
The Army, Navy and Air Force do not use DIG at all. The rank belongs to police and paramilitary organisations, including the BSF and CRPF, where a DIG commands a sector made up of several battalions.
The CBI uses it too. A CBI DIG supervises a group of branches or a zone, and usually reports to a Joint Director. The title is the same but the work is investigation rather than law and order, which is worth remembering when you read a news report.
The Deputy Inspector General links district policing with the state headquarters. If a news report mentions a DIG, look at what follows the name: a range, a CBI zone or a paramilitary sector, because the job differs a lot between them.
