What a Bachelor of Management Studies Degree Is

The Bachelor of Management Studies, usually written BMS, is a three-year undergraduate degree in business and management. In Maharashtra it is closely linked with the University of Mumbai, which started its BMS programme in 1999-2000, and several other universities now offer degrees under the same or a similar name.

It differs from a general B.Com in one respect: management is the subject from the first year. Students study marketing, finance, human resources, operations and strategy alongside accounting and economics, so they meet the vocabulary of business early.

Because of this, many BMS graduates find the move to an MBA easier, though an MBA is not required to work after the degree.

The Three-Year Course Structure

The exact subjects depend on the university and the current syllabus, so check your college's prospectus. The outline below follows the pattern Mumbai-affiliated colleges have used, with a project or dissertation common in the final year.

Teaching leans on case studies, presentations, group work and business research projects rather than on rote answers, and quantitative papers carry real weight. Students comfortable with accounts and statistics usually settle in faster.

First year: foundations

Principles of Management, Financial Accounting, Business Economics, Business Communication and Environmental Studies.

Second year: core management

Marketing Management, Human Resource Management, Production Management, Financial Management, Business Law and Business Research Methods.

Third year: strategy and electives

Strategic Management, International Business and Entrepreneurship, along with elective specialisations such as finance, marketing or HR.

Eligibility, Admission and Colleges

For Mumbai University colleges, the usual requirement is a pass in Class 12 (HSC) or an equivalent with at least 45 per cent marks, and 40 per cent for reserved categories, in one sitting. Admission to Mumbai colleges is on merit through the university's online process, and cut-offs differ widely between colleges and years.

HR College, L.S. Raheja College and Jai Hind College are among the better-known Mumbai colleges that offer BMS. Other universities may use entrance tests such as CUET, so read the admission notice of the university you are applying to.

BMS or BBA: Understanding the Difference

Both are three-year management degrees and both lead towards an MBA. In practice the difference is mostly in the university and the syllabus. BBA programmes under many universities lean towards applied business skills, while BMS under Mumbai University has a broader mix of accounting, economics and management theory.

Employers rarely distinguish between them at entry level. Compare the college, the electives, the internships and the placement record rather than the name alone.

Careers and Further Study After BMS

First jobs are usually in marketing and sales, finance and accounts, human resources or operations. Banks, retail chains, consulting firms and startups hire graduates for executive and trainee roles.

Many graduates go on to an MBA or a PGDM, and some prepare for entrance exams such as CAT and XAT during the third year. Others join a family business or start their own, where the marketing, finance and entrepreneurship papers apply directly. A BMS also allows a switch to a Master's in a specialised field such as finance or human resources.

BMS and BCom: Choosing Between Them

A B.Com gives broader grounding in accounting, tax and law, and it is the usual route to CA, CS and CMA. BMS spends more time on management subjects, which suits students who already know they want to work in marketing, HR or general management.

If you are still undecided, look at the subjects in the second and third years of each course. The papers you find interesting are a better guide than reputation.

Choose a BMS course after reading the syllabus, internships and placement record of the specific college. The three letters on the certificate matter far less than what you learn and practise.
