What the AYUSH ministry covers

AYUSH is built from the first letters of the systems: Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy. The ministry also covers Sowa-Rigpa, the traditional medicine of the Himalayan region. It became a full ministry on 9 November 2014, upgraded from a department that sat inside the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The ministry builds the structure behind these systems: colleges, hospitals, research councils, drug standards and the supply of raw medicinal plants. The National AYUSH Mission, launched in 2014, funds state hospitals, dispensaries, colleges and manufacturing units.

It also sets drug standards. The pharmacopoeias for Ayurvedic, Unani and homoeopathic medicines define the identity, purity and strength of raw drugs, and AYUSH medicine manufacturing is licensed under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules. That framework is what makes an AYUSH prescription a regulated document rather than a herbal remedy picked off a shelf.

The five systems in brief

Ayurveda is the oldest of the systems still practised in India, with classical texts such as the Charaka Samhita on medicine and the Sushruta Samhita on surgery. Yoga descends from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. The United Nations declared 21 June the International Day of Yoga in December 2014, after a proposal from India, and it was first observed in 2015.

Unani is the Greco-Arabic tradition carried by physicians such as Ibn Sina (Avicenna). Siddha comes from the Tamil tradition of the Siddhars and is strongest in Tamil Nadu. Homeopathy was developed by Samuel Hahnemann in Germany in the late eighteenth century on the principle of treating like with like, using highly diluted preparations.

Naturopathy is a drugless system based on diet, water, fasting and other natural methods. In India it is grouped with yoga in the ministry's structure.

Studying AYUSH in India

Each system has its own undergraduate degree: BAMS for Ayurveda, BNYS for naturopathy and yoga, BUMS for Unani, BSMS for Siddha and BHMS for homeopathy. Admission to these courses is through NEET-UG, the same medical entrance used for MBBS, and postgraduate seats are filled through AIAPGET, conducted by the National Testing Agency.

Professional regulation rests with the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine and the National Commission for Homoeopathy, set up under laws passed in 2020 to replace the older central councils. Government seats, state quotas and counselling rounds follow a pattern similar to modern medicine, so students often take part in AYUSH counselling alongside the NEET process.

Each system also has a research council under the ministry, covering Ayurveda, homoeopathy, Unani, Siddha and yoga with naturopathy. They run clinical studies, work on classical texts and surveys of medicinal plants. Graduates can work in a state AYUSH hospital, take up research fellowships or run a private clinic.

Where AYUSH turns up in daily life

Most districts have an AYUSH dispensary or an AYUSH wing inside a government hospital, and state governments run their own colleges and hospitals. The World Health Organization set up its Global Centre for Traditional Medicine at Jamnagar in Gujarat, with the foundation stone laid in 2022.

If you searched these letters because of an admission list or a job advertisement, check which body issued the notice. AYUSH admissions, AYUSH doctor posts and AYUSH medicines fall under different authorities, from the ministry and its commissions to state health departments and the pharmacopoeia bodies.

Buying and using AYUSH medicines safely

Check the label for the manufacturer's licence number and the batch details. Licensed products carry them, and the licence is issued by the state licensing authority. Prefer a medicine prescribed by a registered practitioner of the relevant system over one promoted through advertisements.

Tell your doctor about every medicine you take, including AYUSH medicines, because herbal and mineral preparations can interact with modern drugs. Do not stop treatment for a long-term condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure without medical advice.

Behind the AYUSH letters sit a ministry, a set of medical degrees and thousands of clinics. If you are a NEET aspirant or reading a hospital board, the systems are now easy to tell apart.
