What does AF stand for? A government term, explained.
AF Full Form in English, letter by letter

AF Full Form in Indian Languages
Two letters, several meanings. In a defence column AF reads as Air Force, in a cardiology note it means atrial fibrillation, and in electronics it is audio frequency. Below is 'Air Force' in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Gujarati.
AF as Air Force
An air force is the service branch that operates in the air: fighter and strike aircraft, transport fleets, helicopters, trainers, surveillance aircraft, surface-to-air missiles and the radar network behind them. Most countries keep an army, a navy and an air force, and AF is the shorthand for the third in tables and headings.
In India the service is the Indian Air Force. It was established on 8 October 1932 and its first squadron was formed in 1933 under British rule. It was given the 'Royal' title in 1945 and dropped it when India became a republic in 1950. Its motto, Nabhah Sprsham Deeptam, is Sanskrit for 'touch the sky with glory' and is taken from the Bhagavad Gita.
Beyond combat, an air force is what a country calls when a valley floods. The Indian Air Force flew relief sorties in the 2013 Uttarakhand floods (Operation Rahat), and similar airlifts have followed in flood years in the northeast and the south.
Ranks and roles in the Indian Air Force
The IAF uses the Commonwealth ladder of ranks. The Air Chief Marshal heads the service as Chief of the Air Staff, followed by Air Marshal, Air Vice Marshal, Air Commodore, Group Captain, Wing Commander, Squadron Leader, Flight Lieutenant and Flying Officer.
Its tasks include air defence of Indian airspace, support to the army and navy, airlift of troops and supplies, helicopter relief in disasters and evacuation of Indian citizens from conflict zones abroad.
Frontline aircraft include the Su-30MKI, the Rafale (first aircraft reached India in 2020), the indigenous HAL Tejas, the Mirage 2000 and the Jaguar, supported by transport aircraft and a large helicopter fleet. Much of the fleet is built or serviced in India by Hindustan Aeronautics, which is why AF and HAL appear together in defence reporting.
The IAF celebrates Air Force Day every year on 8 October. Women have flown combat aircraft since 2016, when the first three women fighter pilots were commissioned, and women now serve in both flying and ground duty branches. Entry rules, such as height, eyesight and age limits, are listed in each recruitment notification.
Other air forces that abbreviate to AF
Many other services use the letters: the Royal Air Force, formed in 1918, the United States Air Force, formed in 1947, and the air forces of Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Gulf states. In defence news, AF almost always points to one of these.
The abbreviation also sits inside longer names. USAF is the United States Air Force, PAF the Pakistan Air Force and IAF the Indian one. In exams on world affairs, these shorter forms are what questions use.
AF in Indian defence paperwork
AF sits inside several abbreviations an aspirant meets every week. AFHQ means Air Force Headquarters in New Delhi. AFCAT is the Air Force Common Admission Test, through which graduates enter the flying and ground duty branches. It is held twice a year. Cadets who join through the NDA train at Khadakwasla near Pune, and those in the Air Force wing later train at the Air Force Academy at Dundigal in Hyderabad.
The letters also appear in medical institutions of the services: AFMC is the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, and AFMS is the Armed Forces Medical Services. In those names AF stands for Armed Forces, not Air Force.
The other meanings of AF
In electronics and radio, AF stands for audio frequency, the range the human ear can hear, usually quoted as 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. It appears in amplifier and microphone specifications.
In medicine, AF means atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat that raises the risk of stroke. It turns up in ECG reports and prescriptions. Online, the same letters are used as a slang intensifier, a usage that has no place in exam answers or office mail.
In defence material AF is Air Force, on an ECG strip it is atrial fibrillation, and on a specification sheet it is audio frequency. For the Indian Air Force, AFCAT and the NDA are the two routes most readers are checking.
