CBDT Full Form in Indian Languages
CBDT is the Central Board of Direct Taxes, the body behind India's income tax rules and deadlines. Its name in six Indian languages is below.
What the board is
The Central Board of Direct Taxes is a statutory authority created under the Central Boards of Revenue Act, 1963. It works within the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance, and its offices are in North Block, New Delhi.
A chairman of special secretary rank heads it, with members who look after areas such as revenue, legislation, investigation and administration. The board issues the circulars and notifications that every income tax officer follows.
Policy and control, not paperwork
CBDT frames the system the department works within. It drafts circulars that explain unclear provisions, notifies rules and forms, and issues instructions binding on assessing officers. When a Budget changes a rate or introduces a regime, CBDT writes the rules to put it into effect.
It also supervises the department's field structure, including the chief commissioners who oversee assessments, refunds and appeals, and the investigation wing that conducts searches and seizures. The officer you meet at a local income tax office answers to this structure.
The board also handles the technical side of international taxation, including rules on transfer pricing and the administration of tax treaties with other countries. The rules that decide whether a foreign company pays tax in India are written here as well.
Faceless assessment and the digital shift
Over recent years the department moved tax work onto the portal. E-assessment began in 2019, and the Faceless Assessment Scheme followed in August 2020, under which cases are allocated to officers across the country and communication happens online rather than in person. Faceless appeals were introduced in September 2020, and an e-verification scheme followed in 2021.
The Centralised Processing Centre in Bengaluru handles return processing and refunds largely by computer, which is why many refunds now arrive within weeks of filing.
What e-assessment changed for taxpayers
Notices now arrive on the e-filing portal with a fixed time to reply, and the reply is also uploaded online. Case allocation is random, so a taxpayer does not choose or meet the assessing officer.
The tax calendar it sets
CBDT notifications set the rhythm of a taxpayer's year: the 31 July due date for most individual filers, other dates for audit cases, quarterly TDS statement deadlines, and yearly changes to ITR forms. Its orders also extend deadlines when needed.
The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026, with new rules and forms notified by the board. CBDT therefore also explains the move to the new law's terminology, such as 'tax year' in place of the old assessment year and previous year, so older forms and references may look different.
CBDT, CBIC and the Income Tax Department
A common confusion: CBDT handles direct taxes, which you pay on your income, while the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs handles GST and customs. Both sit in the Department of Revenue but have separate laws and officers.
The Income Tax Department is the operating arm that CBDT directs, including assessing officers, help centres and the e-filing portal. When a news report says 'CBDT extended the deadline', it means the board has issued an order that applies across the country.
Checking a CBDT notice
Circulars and notifications are published on the Income Tax Department's website, each with a number and date. If someone forwards a screenshot of a supposed new rule, look for it in the circulars section of the site instead of trusting the image. Fake tax notices and refund messages are a common scam, so never click payment links in a message that claims to be from the department.
To check a notice you received about your own return, log in to the e-filing portal and look under pending actions or e-proceedings. A genuine notice carries a document identification number that you can verify on the portal. Never rely only on an email or SMS.
Almost every income tax form, deadline and rule an Indian taxpayer meets passes through this board. When a Budget announces a change, CBDT usually writes the circular that makes it work.
