What the User Datagram Protocol Does

At the transport layer of a network sit two main protocols, TCP and UDP. TCP builds a reliable conversation: it opens a connection, numbers its packets, re-sends whatever is lost and closes cleanly. User Datagram Protocol skips all of that. It fires datagrams at the destination and moves on.

There is no handshake, no ordering and no retransmission. If a packet goes missing, nothing happens automatically, and the application above decides whether to care. That sounds careless, but it removes waiting, and waiting is what makes a live feed feel slow.

The cost is a tiny header: eight bytes holding source port, destination port, length and a checksum. TCP's header starts at twenty bytes before options, so UDP messages carry less weight and need fewer round trips.

A useful picture is the postal system. TCP is a registered letter with acknowledgement, and UDP is a postcard: cheap, quick, and nobody tells you if it was lost. Both have a place, as long as you pick the right one for the message.

UDP or TCP: Choosing the Trade-off

Choose TCP when every byte must arrive intact and in order: a bank statement, an email, a web page, a file download. Choose UDP when timeliness beats completeness: voice calls, live video, cricket streams, multiplayer games, telemetry from machines.

A dropped frame in a live stream is invisible, while a dropped line in a transaction is a disaster. That single difference explains most protocol choices on the internet.

Modern systems cheat nicely. QUIC, the protocol behind HTTP/3, runs over UDP and then rebuilds reliability, encryption and ordering on top. Google designed it, and browsers now use it where servers support it, which means much of your browsing already travels as UDP traffic.

The Services That Run on UDP

DNS uses UDP port 53 for ordinary queries, falling back to TCP for large responses or zone transfers. DHCP hands out addresses over ports 67 and 68, NTP keeps clocks synced on port 123, and network monitoring uses SNMP on port 161.

Voice and video move over RTP, which sits on UDP ports chosen per call, while gaming engines typically send position updates the same way: dozens of small messages per second, where a fresh one is more useful than a re-sent old one.

WebRTC, the technology behind browser video calls and many webinar and tele-medicine tools, sends its media over UDP and falls back to TCP only when firewalls block the direct path.

The same openness creates abuse. UDP is easy to spoof, so it powers amplification attacks: a small forged request bounces off an open server and arrives at the victim as a much larger reply. Rate limiting and response filtering are the standard defences.

The flip side is scale. Because UDP keeps no per-connection state, one server can answer many clients at once without handshake bookkeeping, which is why DNS servers and large multiplayer games run on it so comfortably.

Why Exams and Interviews Keep Asking About UDP

UDP is a favourite in networking questions because it forces the trade-off into the open: reliability versus latency. Expect to be asked to name the layer (transport, layer four), the header size, and one service that uses it.

The practical answer to remember is the pairing. DNS queries, live streaming and gaming on UDP; HTTP, SMTP, FTP and database traffic on TCP. Once you can place QUIC in that picture, you can talk about the modern internet rather than just the textbook version.

Interviewers also like the follow-up: how would you send a file reliably over UDP? The answer is that you add numbering, acknowledgements and re-sending in the application, which is how QUIC and several game networking libraries work. That is a good sign you understand why TCP exists.

The User Datagram Protocol is the internet's fast, careless option, and that is why it carries calls, streams and games. In the UDP versus TCP debate, the honest answer depends on whether you can afford to lose a packet.

UDP Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of UDP?

User Datagram Protocol is the full form of UDP, a transport layer protocol that sends data packets without first establishing a connection. It is defined in RFC 768, written by Jon Postel in 1980.

What is the difference between TCP and UDP?

TCP establishes a connection, guarantees ordered delivery and re-sends lost packets, which suits web pages, email and files. UDP sends without any of that overhead, which suits live audio, video and gaming where speed matters more than perfect delivery.

Which applications use UDP?

DNS queries, DHCP, NTP time sync, SNMP monitoring, VoIP calls, live video streams and many multiplayer games run on UDP. HTTP/3 also uses UDP through the QUIC protocol, adding its own reliability layer.

Is UDP secure?

UDP itself provides no encryption or authentication, just a port pair and a checksum. Security has to come from the application, for example DTLS for encrypted datagrams, along with firewall rules and rate limits that blunt spoofing and amplification attacks.

How big is a UDP header?

Eight bytes: source port, destination port, length and checksum, two bytes each. TCP's minimum header is twenty bytes.

Is UDP faster than TCP?

Usually it has lower delay, because it skips the handshake and retransmission. It is not always faster for bulk transfers, since TCP's congestion control makes sure a link is used well while UDP leaves that job to the application.
