TT in banking: Telegraphic Transfer

A Telegraphic Transfer is a bank-to-bank transfer of funds, historically the fastest way to send money abroad. The name comes from the days when instructions went by telegraph. Today the term survives mostly in foreign exchange: banks still quote a TT buying rate and a TT selling rate for currency conversion, and remittance paperwork still calls the transaction a TT.

The money moves through SWIFT messages between correspondent banks, which is why an international TT usually takes one to three working days and carries a fee plus an exchange-rate margin. For a student paying a foreign university fee, the TT is the wire transfer in the payment instructions.

Within India the same idea runs under other names: NEFT for transfers of any amount, RTGS for large-value payments of ₹2 lakh and above, and IMPS and UPI for instant small payments. Nobody calls these a TT, but they are the domestic cousins of the same electronic transfer.

Using a TT for remittances from India

For outward remittances, banks ask for the beneficiary's name, address, account number and SWIFT or IBAN code, along with the purpose of the remittance. Limits under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme apply to individuals, and education and medical remittances come with their own documentation requirements.

Charges vary: an Indian bank typically adds a fixed outbound fee, possible correspondent bank charges and the exchange-rate margin, so the effective cost is usually higher than the headline fee. Compare the total rupees debited, not just the fee.

Inward remittances reach the account through the SWIFT message, and the bank credits them once the purpose of the remittance is clear. Keep the credit advice, because it serves as evidence of foreign inward remittance for tax and visa files.

TT in sport: table tennis

Table Tennis, called TT in Indian colleges and office complexes, is played on a table 2.74 metres long with a 15.25 cm net, using a 40 mm ball (plastic since 2014). Games go to 11 points with a two-point lead, usually best of five or seven.

Service rules are stricter than they look: the ball must rest on the open flat palm, be tossed at least 16 cm up, and be struck so it bounces on the server's side first and then the opponent's. A serve that touches the net but lands correctly is a let and is replayed.

China dominates the sport at world level, but India has a real presence. Achanta Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra are the best-known players, and Batra won the women's singles gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

TT on a vaccination card: Tetanus Toxoid

Older vaccination cards, particularly for pregnant women and for injuries, mention Tetanus Toxoid, written TT. It protects against tetanus, which people can catch when soil or rust enters a wound. India's immunisation programme replaced TT with Td (tetanus and reduced diphtheria) vaccine in 2018, so newer cards say Td, but TT is still how many doctors and families speak about the tetanus injection.

After a deep or dirty wound, ask a doctor whether a booster is due. The answer depends on when you last had a dose and on how contaminated the injury is.

Other places TT appears

TT also means time trial in cycling, where each rider races the clock alone, and the Isle of Man TT is a famous motorcycle race. Some universities use TT for teaching term names. A bank slip, a sports fixture or a clinic form will usually settle it at a glance.

A bank slip means Telegraphic Transfer, a sports notice means Table Tennis, and a clinic card means Tetanus Toxoid. When money is involved, confirm the charges and the exchange rate before you instruct the bank.
