What NEFT is and who runs it

NEFT lets you send money from your account to any other bank account in India. The Reserve Bank of India started it in November 2005, and banks, not the RBI, deal with customers. You instruct your own bank, and the RBI's settlement system moves the money between the two banks.

The key idea is batching. Your instruction is not settled the moment you press send. It joins a batch, and batches are settled at half-hourly intervals. Since 16 December 2019 these batches run round the clock on every day of the year, including Sundays and bank holidays.

Any savings or current account holder can use it, through net banking, a mobile app or a branch counter. Both banks must be NEFT-enabled, which in practice means almost every bank branch in the country.

What you need to send a NEFT transfer

You add the receiver as a beneficiary first. For that you need the receiver's name, account number, the bank's IFSC code and the account type. Banks usually keep a short cooling period of a few hours before a new beneficiary can receive large amounts, so add the name before you need it.

Then you enter the amount and confirm with the one-time password or your app PIN. The bank gives a UTR number (unique transaction reference). Keep it. If the money does not reach the receiver, the UTR is what both banks use to trace the payment.

Names are not always matched by the receiving bank, so a wrong account number can credit a stranger. Check the number twice, and send a small test amount when paying a new party a large sum.

Keep the receipt or a screenshot as well. If a business asks for proof of payment, the UTR number, date, amount and the receiver's account details are what an accountant needs to match your payment against an invoice. Most banks also let you download the statement entry for the same purpose.

A worked example: Sunday rent transfer

Suppose you owe Rs 18,000 rent and the landlord's account is at another bank. You add him as a beneficiary on Saturday night and send the amount on Sunday at 6:10 pm. Your bank submits it to the next half-hourly batch, which settles at 6:30 pm. The landlord's bank credits the account after that, and he gets an SMS usually within the hour.

Before December 2019 the same transfer would have waited till Monday morning. This is the change that made NEFT useful for weekend and late-night payments.

NEFT, IMPS, RTGS and UPI compared

IMPS credits the receiver within seconds at any hour, and is meant for smaller amounts. RTGS settles each payment individually in real time, with a minimum of Rs 2 lakh, so it suits property payments and large business settlements. NEFT has no minimum and no fixed upper limit set by the RBI, which makes it the usual choice for mid-sized, non-urgent payments.

UPI is the app-based instant system most people use for everyday payments. It has per-transaction limits set by the payment network and your bank, so people shift to NEFT when the amount is larger than those limits. Banks set their own maximum for NEFT through net banking, so check yours.

Charges, failed transfers and returns

The RBI does not charge banks for NEFT, and online NEFT from a savings account is free at most banks. For payments made at a branch, the RBI caps what a bank may charge: Rs 2.50 up to Rs 10,000, Rs 5 above that up to Rs 1 lakh, Rs 15 up to Rs 2 lakh and Rs 25 above Rs 2 lakh, plus GST. Check your bank's schedule, since the exact charges vary.

If the receiver's account is closed, frozen or wrongly entered, the receiving bank must return the money to the sender's account. The RBI's rule is that the return should reach you within two hours of the batch in which the credit failed. A wrong account number that actually exists is a different problem, because the money lands with someone else and the banks can only request recovery.

Businesses also use NEFT to pay salaries and vendors in bulk, through a file uploaded to the bank's corporate portal. Each line in the file is settled in the same batches, so a salary file uploaded on a Saturday evening can reach employees the same night.

For ordinary payments that do not need to land in seconds, NEFT is a safe and cheap choice. Check the IFSC and account number before you press confirm, and save the UTR number after every large transfer.

NEFT Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of NEFT?

National Electronic Funds Transfer. It is the electronic payment system, overseen by the Reserve Bank of India, that moves money from one bank account to another anywhere in India.

How is NEFT different from IMPS and RTGS?

NEFT settles in half-hourly batches with no minimum amount. IMPS credits the receiver in seconds for smaller amounts, and RTGS settles large payments of Rs 2 lakh and above one by one in real time.

How long does a NEFT transfer take?

Usually the receiver is credited within a batch or two, which is about 30 minutes to two hours. The time depends on when you submit the request relative to the next half-hourly batch.

Is NEFT available on Sundays and at night?

Yes. Since 16 December 2019 NEFT works 24 hours a day on all days including holidays. A bank's own app can still be down for maintenance, which is announced beforehand.

What is the NEFT limit and what are the charges?

The RBI sets no minimum or maximum for NEFT, but banks fix their own online limits. Charges are usually nil for online savings-account transfers, and capped at Rs 2.50 to Rs 25 plus GST for branch transfers.

What if I send NEFT to a wrong account?

If the account does not exist or cannot receive money, the amount is returned to you. If it exists and belongs to someone else, tell your bank at once with the UTR number and ask for a recovery request.
