SGPT Full Form

Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase

What does SGPT stand for? A medical term, explained.

SGPT Full Form in English, letter by letter

SGPT is Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase, a liver enzyme now called ALT, measured in blood tests to check the liver for damage.

What SGPT measures

SGPT (Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase) is an enzyme that sits mostly inside liver cells. Its current name is alanine aminotransferase, or ALT, and most laboratories outside India print only ALT. Indian reports still show SGPT regularly, which is why the two names confuse people.

When liver cells are injured by fat, infection, alcohol or a drug, they leak the enzyme into the blood, so the SGPT level in serum climbs. It is measured in units per litre (U/L) as part of a liver function test panel.

A second enzyme, SGOT (aspartate aminotransferase or AST), appears beside it, along with bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, GGT and albumin. Doctors read the pattern across the panel, not one figure in isolation.

Reading your SGPT number

Most Indian laboratories treat roughly 7 to 45 or 50 U/L as normal for healthy adults, and each lab prints its own reference range on the report. Compare your value with that range, not with a figure found online. Ranges for women are often a little lower than for men.

A mild rise, up to about twice the upper limit, is common with fatty liver, early viral hepatitis, alcohol, obesity, diabetes or a medicine started recently. A jump of ten times or more suggests acute injury such as hepatitis, a paracetamol overdose or a blocked bile duct.

The ratio between SGOT and SGPT also carries information: a ratio above about two, with SGPT the lower of the pair, is classically seen in alcoholic liver disease. One raised value is not a diagnosis. Doctors repeat the test, often after a fast, before concluding anything.

What sends SGPT up in Indian patients

Metabolic causes dominate now. Fatty liver linked to abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and high triglycerides is the most frequent reason for a mildly high SGPT in urban India. Many people find out only through a routine health check, with no symptoms at all.

Infections matter too: hepatitis A, B and E are common in India and hepatitis B and hepatitis C can turn chronic. A HBsAg test checks for hepatitis B. Alcohol is a straightforward contributor, and so are medicines: anti-tuberculosis drugs such as isoniazid and rifampicin, statins, paracetamol taken beyond the safe dose, and some herbal preparations contaminated with heavy metals.

Muscle injury, an overactive thyroid and coeliac disease can also lift the enzyme, because ALT is not exclusive to the liver. Hard exercise the day before the test can push it up for the same reason. That is why the report is read together with symptoms, examination findings and other tests.

Before and after the test

Tell your doctor about every medicine, supplement and alcohol habit. Labs often advise an 8 to 12 hour fast, though an SGPT can be done without one. Biotin supplements (vitamin B7, common in hair and skin products) can distort some results, so ask whether to stop them 48 to 72 hours beforehand. Drink water and go in the morning.

Next steps after a raised result are usually an abdominal ultrasound, hepatitis B and C screening, fasting glucose and lipid levels, a thyroid test (TSH) and a repeat liver function test within weeks. Your BMI and waist size are also noted, since weight loss is the main treatment for fatty liver. For someone already on TB treatment the number guides dosing. A persistent rise deserves a specialist's opinion, not repeated self-testing.

From SGPT to ALT: what changed

Older textbooks and many Indian lab forms kept SGPT and SGOT from an earlier naming system based on the substrates the enzymes work on, glutamic and pyruvic acid. Modern guidelines rename them ALT and AST, but the old abbreviations never disappeared from Indian practice.

For students the exam point is short: SGPT is Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase, a liver enzyme equal to ALT. For patients the practical point is that the number reflects the state of liver cells and starts a conversation with the doctor, it does not end one.

Keeping your liver numbers in check

For most people with a mildly raised SGPT the advice is simple and unglamorous: lose a little weight, walk daily, cut sugary drinks and fried food, limit alcohol, and avoid taking painkillers or herbal supplements without asking. A 5 to 10 per cent drop in body weight often brings the enzyme down.

Hepatitis B vaccination is part of the national immunisation programme for infants, and adults who missed it can be vaccinated too. Never stop prescribed TB or thyroid medicine on your own because a report looks alarming. Talk to the doctor who prescribed it.

SGPT on a report means Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase, the marker your doctor calls ALT. Know the reference range, the common causes and the follow-up tests, and the number stops being frightening and starts being useful.

SGPT Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of SGPT?

SGPT stands for Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase, an enzyme released by liver cells and also known as ALT (alanine aminotransferase). It is measured in a blood test to check for liver inflammation or damage.

What is the normal SGPT level?

Most labs accept roughly 7 to 45 or 50 U/L for healthy adults, but the printed range varies between laboratories. Read your value against the range on your own report. A mild rise usually calls for a repeat test and a look at lifestyle, not panic.

What causes high SGPT?

Fatty liver linked to obesity and diabetes is the most common cause in India. Other causes include hepatitis A, B or E, alcohol, anti-TB drugs, statins, paracetamol overdose, thyroid disease and muscle injury. Your doctor combines the value with symptoms and other tests.

How is SGPT different from SGOT?

SGPT is ALT and sits mainly in the liver, while SGOT is AST and is also found in heart and muscle tissue. Both appear in a liver function test, and a high AST to ALT ratio points towards alcoholic liver disease.

Do I need to fast before an SGPT test?

Fasting for 8 to 12 hours is commonly advised, though the test can be done without it. Avoid alcohol, list every medicine and supplement, and stop biotin products 48 to 72 hours earlier, since biotin can distort some laboratory results.

Can a high SGPT come down by itself?

Yes, if the cause was temporary, such as a viral illness, a short course of medicine or heavy exercise. Persistent fatty liver needs weight loss and lifestyle change. Always repeat the test and let your doctor judge the trend.
