Before anyone spends a year building software, someone builds a POC that answers one question: can the idea work at all? Here is Proof of Concept in six Indian languages.

What a Proof of Concept is

A Proof of Concept is a small, time-boxed exercise that shows whether an idea or technology works in practice. It is not a product and not a pitch. It is a working demonstration, however rough, that settles the feasibility question for one specific case.

Good POCs are narrow. They pick a single use case, define what success looks like before any work starts, and run for a few weeks with a small team. At the end you have evidence, a written record of what was tested and what happened, and a decision: build more, change direction or stop.

Take a bank that wants to read cheque images automatically. The POC feeds a few hundred scanned cheques through the proposed software and measures how many fields are read correctly. That single number decides whether anyone signs a contract, and it takes weeks to produce rather than years.

Where POCs turn up

In IT services pitches

Large Indian IT firms run proofs of concept before a client signs a big contract, feeding a sample of the client's own data through a proposed solution to see whether the promised accuracy, speed or cost saving actually appears. The POC often decides who wins the work.

In startups and investing

Founders build a POC to prove the hardest technical claim, and investors ask to see it rather than the slides. A working demonstration of a delivery-matching engine, a credit-scoring model or a device prototype settles arguments that no forecast can.

In government and regulated work

Departments run pilots and proofs of concept before scaling a digital service. In banking, payments and health technology, projects usually pass through a limited trial under the regulator's watch before they are opened to the public.

POC, prototype, MVP and pilot

The four words get used interchangeably and should not be. A POC tests whether something can work at all, usually internally, and is often thrown away afterwards. A prototype explores how it looks and feels, and may not be functional. An MVP, or minimum viable product, is the smallest version real users can use, built to test demand rather than feasibility. A pilot runs the finished thing with a limited group under live conditions to test operations and scale.

Take a food-delivery idea. The POC asks whether orders can be matched to restaurants in under two seconds on a laptop using sample data. The MVP delivers in one neighbourhood. The pilot runs in three cities with real support staff, real refunds and real traffic.

Running a POC well

Write the hypothesis and the success metrics first, use data close to production, set a deadline and a budget that nobody minds losing, and agree the kill criteria before you begin. Then record the result, including the parts that failed, and circulate it. A POC reported only verbally gets remembered as a success whatever actually happened.

One trap deserves its own warning. Code written for a proof of concept is meant to be quick, not durable, and promoting it straight into production is how systems become unfixable. A passed POC is the start of engineering, not the end of it.

Reading a POC proposal before you agree to one

If a vendor offers you a POC, ask four questions. Who pays for it? Whose data will be used, and will it be returned or deleted afterwards? What exact result counts as success? And who owns the code and the findings? Free POCs are common in AI and SaaS sales, and they are often designed to tie you to the vendor, so the success criteria and the exit terms should be written down before the work starts.

Also check scale. A POC that works on a thousand records may fail on a crore. Ask what the test says about volume, cost per transaction and security, and who will review those results on your side.

A POC is cheap insurance against building the wrong thing for a year. Define the question, set the deadline and let the evidence decide the next step.

POC Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of POC?

POC stands for Proof of Concept, a short exercise showing that an idea or technology can work. In US usage it can also mean person of colour, and in healthcare, point of care, so the surrounding sentence decides the meaning.

What is the difference between a POC and an MVP?

A POC tests feasibility and is meant for internal use. An MVP is the smallest product real customers can use, built to test whether anyone wants it. Teams reach for a POC first when the technology itself is unproven.

How long should a proof of concept take?

A few weeks is typical, with the end date fixed at the start. If it has run for months, the scope has crept and the original question has probably changed, which is a signal to stop and restate it.

Do investors ask to see a POC?

Often. A working demonstration of the hardest claim carries more weight than projections, especially in deep technology, health and fintech, where the main risk is whether the thing can be built at all.

What happens after a successful POC?

You document the findings, estimate the cost of a production version and decide whether to proceed, usually with a pilot or an MVP. Funding, staffing and a realistic timeline get settled at that point.

Is a POC the same as a pilot?

No. A POC checks whether something can work, often on sample data in a lab. A pilot runs the real thing with real users on a limited scale to see how it behaves in practice.
