From Pohang Iron and Steel Company to POSCO

POSCO comes from Pohang Iron and Steel Company, founded in 1968 as a state-backed company and built at Pohang, a coastal city in South Korea's south-east. Commercial production began in 1973, and the short name POSCO became the official name in the early 2000s. The group is now organised under a holding company, POSCO Holdings.

South Korea had little iron ore and almost no coking coal, so POSCO was built on imported raw material and foreign technology, placed next to the shipyards and car plants that would consume its steel. That geography is why a country with no ore ended up with one of the world's major steelmakers.

What POSCO makes, and how big it is

Scale

The works at Pohang and Gwangyang together turn out several tens of millions of tonnes of crude steel a year, which puts the group among the larger steelmakers in the world, though behind the biggest Chinese producers.

Products that end up everywhere

The mix leans towards value rather than volume: sheet for car bodies, plate for ships and pipelines, and grain-oriented electrical steel for transformers and motor cores, including motors for EV makers, a specialty that only a few mills make well.

Technology it developed

POSCO developed Finex, a process that makes liquid iron directly from iron ore fines without first making coke or sinter, and it is working on hydrogen-based routes to lower emissions. Both grew out of Korea's need to import every tonne of ore it smelts.

The Odisha plant that was never built

India knows POSCO best for a plant that was never built. In June 2005 the company signed an MoU with the Odisha government for a steel plant of 12 million tonnes a year near Paradip in Jagatsinghpur district, with an investment put at about $12 billion, then the largest FDI proposal in the country.

Land acquisition met sustained resistance from villagers and betel-vine farmers, organised as the Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti, and forest clearances were disputed. Years passed without construction, the original agreement lapsed, and the state took back part of the land. POSCO formally withdrew in 2017, and the acquired land went to the state's land bank. A smaller plan in Karnataka also did not go ahead.

The episode remains a reference point in Indian debates over land acquisition and is cited whenever a big project meets local opposition. It also shows how much announced steel capacity in India stays on paper.

Reading POSCO in steel news

Steel stories about POSCO usually concern prices, exports or output cuts, because South Korean mills are among the sources of flat steel that Indian producers watch closely. India has used safeguard duties on some imported steel to protect domestic mills, and a headline about POSCO raising prices or trimming capacity feeds into that picture.

Korea is a major steel exporter and POSCO is its largest mill, so the company's order book is read as a gauge of Asian demand. When Korean offers slide, buyers of imported sheet in India feel it first.

For an Indian reader the practical takeaway is price. When Korean, Chinese or Japanese mills offer cheap flat steel, Indian mills lose margin and ask the government for protection, and when those offers rise, domestic steel prices usually follow within weeks. Following POSCO's quarterly results gives an early read on that cycle.

POSCO and Indian steel companies

India's own steel industry is led by SAIL, Tata Steel and JSW, and the country has become one of the largest steel producers in the world. POSCO has also had other Indian links, including a processing plant in Maharashtra that serves car makers. For students, the useful comparison is that India has ore and coal while Korea does not, so Indian mills can integrate backwards in a way POSCO never could.

If you see POSCO in a question about companies named after places, the pattern is common: Pohang, the town, gave the steelmaker its name, much as Jamshedpur gave Tata Steel its home.

POSCO, from Pohang Iron and Steel Company, is the mill that turned an ore-poor Korea into a steel exporter. Its abandoned Odisha project remains the most visible chapter of that story in India.

POSCO Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of POSCO?

POSCO comes from Pohang Iron and Steel Company, the South Korean steelmaker founded in 1968 around its Pohang works. The short form became the official company name later.

Where is POSCO located?

Its first and largest works are at Pohang in South Korea's south-east, with a second major plant at Gwangyang. The company is Korean and sells steel across Asia and beyond.

Did POSCO try to build a plant in India?

Yes. In 2005 it agreed to build a 12 million tonne plant in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur district. Land acquisition protests and clearance disputes dragged on, and POSCO formally withdrew in 2017 with the land going back to the state.

What is Finex, the POSCO technology?

Finex is POSCO's smelting-reduction process that makes liquid iron directly from iron ore fines, skipping the coking and sintering steps that a conventional blast furnace route needs.

Is POSCO the biggest steel company in the world?

No. It is among the larger steelmakers, behind the biggest Chinese groups and a few others. Its reputation rests on product quality, especially automotive and electrical steels, rather than on volume.

Why did villagers oppose the POSCO project?

They feared losing farmland, betel vineyards and forest-based livelihoods, and questioned the compensation and the environmental clearances. The resistance lasted for years and shaped later debate on land acquisition.
