What does PMSBY stand for? A government term, explained.
PMSBY Full Form in English, letter by letter
PMSBY is a government accident insurance scheme in India that costs ₹20 a year and pays ₹2 lakh for accidental death or total disability.
PMSBY Full Form in Indian Languages
₹20 a year, debited automatically from your savings account, against an accident. That is PMSBY, or Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, in six Indian languages, one of the cheapest insurance covers you can buy.
What the Scheme Pays Out
The PMSBY full form is Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, an accident insurance scheme launched in May 2015 along with the life cover scheme PMJJBY. It pays ₹2 lakh for accidental death or total permanent disability, and ₹1 lakh for partial permanent disability.
Total permanent disability under the scheme means the total and irrecoverable loss of sight in both eyes, or loss of use of both hands or feet, or loss of sight in one eye together with loss of use of a hand or foot. Partial disability means the loss of sight in one eye or the loss of use of one hand or foot. Payment goes to the nominee on death, or to the insured person for disability.
The cover is for accidents only. Death from illness or natural causes is not covered, which is what PMJJBY or a term plan is for.
India records well over 1.5 lakh road accident deaths a year, and an accident hits a young family's income far harder than a planned expense does.
Eligibility and the ₹20 Premium
Any savings bank account holder aged 18 to 70 can enrol, with a nominee named on the form. The premium is ₹20 a year, debited automatically from the account.
The cover year runs from 1 June to 31 May, and the premium is auto-debited around the start of the cycle. If the balance is short, the cover can lapse for that year, so keep money in the account in late May. Ask your bank about joining mid-year, as the rules for that differ from the main enrolment window.
You can join at the branch, through net or mobile banking, or through a banking correspondent. Aadhaar-based KYC and consent for the auto-debit are part of the enrolment form.
Because one person can hold only one PMSBY cover, someone with accounts in several banks should enrol through just one of them.
What Is Covered, and What Is Not
Cover applies around the clock to accidents: road, rail and air crashes, drowning, falls, and incidents at home or at work. Disability that existed before enrolment is not covered, and the policy has other exclusions, such as intentional self-injury, so read the policy terms at your bank.
Claims need evidence: the bank claim form, death certificate or disability certificate, and police records such as an FIR or inquest report where the circumstances require one. The insurer decides, and the bank is only the collection point.
It also does not pay hospital bills. There is no medical reimbursement, no daily hospital cash and no cover for treatment costs, only the lump sums on death or the specified disabilities.
PMSBY or PMJJBY?
PMSBY covers accidents across a wide age band for ₹20 a year, while PMJJBY covers death from any cause for entrants aged 18 to 50 at ₹436. Together they cost ₹456 a year, roughly ₹1.25 a day for ₹4 lakh of combined cover for a young adult.
Neither has a savings or maturity component, and neither replaces a term plan sized to your loans. They are a floor for households that would otherwise carry nothing.
Both schemes were launched together in 2015 with the Atal Pension Yojana, and all three work through the same savings account.
If You Ever Need to Claim
Tell the bank quickly, collect the claim pack, and keep the FIR and medical documents together. Most delays are paperwork and not dispute. Settlement comes to the nominee's bank account after the insurer's review.
Check each year that the premium has actually been debited, because a failed auto-debit is silent until you look for it.
Keep the enrolment acknowledgement or the bank record of the debit. A claim is checked against that record, not against a card in your wallet. Tell your nominee that the scheme exists, because many families never learn about it until too late.
Many insured people never tell their families. Write the bank, account number and enrolment date on a card and keep it with your important papers.
Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana buys ₹2 lakh of accident cover for ₹20 a year, with ₹1 lakh for partial disability. Keep balance in the account at renewal time, watch the debit, and keep your nominee's details current.
PMSBY Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of PMSBY?
PMSBY stands for Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, an accident insurance scheme run through banks. It pays ₹2 lakh for accidental death or total permanent disability and ₹1 lakh for partial permanent disability.
Who is eligible for PMSBY?
Any savings bank account holder aged 18 to 70 with a nominee named on the enrolment form. There is no medical test, and joining happens at the branch or through net and mobile banking.
How much is the premium?
₹20 a year, auto-debited from the savings account. The cover year runs from 1 June to 31 May.
Does PMSBY cover natural death?
No. It pays only for accidents and accident-related disability, not for death from illness or other natural causes. For cover against any cause of death, PMJJBY is the scheme designed for that.
Which documents are needed for a PMSBY claim?
The claim form from the bank, the death certificate or disability certificate, identity and bank details of the claimant, and police documents such as an FIR or inquest report where the case requires them. Missing police paperwork is a common reason claims are delayed.
Can I have PMSBY if I have another accident policy?
Yes. PMSBY is a separate scheme, and holding a private accident or life policy does not stop you from enrolling. The scheme allows only one PMSBY cover per person through one bank account.
