What Provident Fund means in India

PF stands for Provident Fund, a savings and retirement scheme into which you and your employer contribute every month and which earns declared interest. In salary conversations it almost always means the Employees' Provident Fund run by the EPFO under the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.

The law applies to establishments with 20 or more employees, while smaller firms can enrol voluntarily. The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, runs it for crores of subscribers and tracks each one through a 12-digit Universal Account Number that stays with you across jobs and cities.

What separates PF from an ordinary mutual fund is compulsion and exit rules. The deduction is automatic, the money is meant for retirement, and pulling it out early can cost you tax benefits and, for the pension part, years of future pension.

How much goes in, and where it lands

Both sides put in 12% of basic wages plus dearness allowance. The employee's share goes entirely into the EPF account. The employer's 12% splits: 8.33% goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme, calculated on a wage ceiling of ₹15,000 a month, which caps that pension contribution at ₹1,250. The rest of the employer share goes to your EPF balance.

If your basic pay is above the ceiling, you can still ask to contribute on your full wage, provided the employer agrees and the option is recorded on the EPFO portal. It is worth doing if you want a larger retirement balance rather than a larger take-home.

Interest is declared by the EPFO each year and approved by the government. The rate has been 8.25% for the last few years, including the 2025-26 decision, and is credited annually. Under the old tax regime, your contribution qualifies for the ₹1.5 lakh deduction, interest on your own contributions up to ₹2.5 lakh a year stays tax-free, and a withdrawal after five years of continuous service is not taxed. Tax rules change with each budget, so check the current year's rules.

PF is more than one scheme

PPF, the Public Provident Fund

Same idea, no employer. You open the account yourself and put in anything from ₹500 to ₹1.5 lakh a year, and it runs for 15 years with interest set by the government every quarter (7.1% for a long stretch of recent years). It suits the self-employed and students as much as salaried people.

VPF, GPF and CPF

Voluntary Provident Fund lets you contribute more than 12%, up to your entire basic pay, into the same EPF account. General Provident Fund is the version for government employees, and Contributory Provident Fund covers certain staff outside the pension scheme.

How it reads on the payslip

Salary letters write EPF, PF or provident fund for the same deduction. A PF advance means a partial withdrawal rather than a full exit from the scheme.

Checking and moving your PF

The passbook sits on the EPFO member portal and the UMANG app. Log in with your UAN, confirm that Aadhaar, PAN and bank details are linked and verified under KYC, and the balance updates after each month's credit. Keep an e-nomination on file, because claims without one take longer to settle.

When you change jobs, ask the new employer to use your existing UAN rather than creating a new one. An online transfer claim moves the balance from the old account. Partial withdrawals are allowed for a house, marriage, medical treatment and children's education, each with its own service requirement.

If the employer deducts PF but does not deposit it, the passbook will show no credit for that month. Raise it first with HR, then with the EPFO through the grievance portal, since the employer is legally liable for the deposit.

Reading a PF passbook line by line

The passbook lists employee share, employer share and pension contribution for each month. A month with no entry means the deposit was late or missing. The interest line appears once a year, after the rate is notified, so a balance can look static for months before the interest arrives. If the closing balance does not match your arithmetic, compare the wage on which the contribution was made with your basic pay, because a low declared wage means a low contribution.

PF is the least glamorous line on your payslip and often the largest sum you build without noticing. Open your UAN passbook this month and make sure the nomination is in place.

PF Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of PF?

The full form of PF is Provident Fund. On a salary it usually means the Employees' Provident Fund maintained by the EPFO, while the same expansion covers the self-funded Public Provident Fund, or PPF.

How much is deducted from my salary for PF?

The employee contributes 12% of basic wages plus dearness allowance and the employer matches it. Of the employer share, 8.33% goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme on a wage ceiling of ₹15,000 (₹1,250 a month at most), and the balance goes to EPF.

What is the difference between PF and PPF?

PF is deducted from salary with a matching employer contribution and is tied to your job. PPF is opened by you alone, accepts ₹500 to ₹1.5 lakh each year, runs for 15 years and has no employer involved.

Is the PF amount taxable?

Under the old regime, contributions qualify for a deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh a year, and interest is tax-free while your annual contribution is at or below ₹2.5 lakh. Withdrawal after five years of continuous service is tax-free. Check the current year's rules.

How can I check my PF balance?

Use the UMANG app or the EPFO member portal with your UAN and read the passbook, which updates after the employer's monthly deposit. Make sure Aadhaar, PAN and bank details are linked and your e-nomination is filed.

Can I withdraw my PF when I change jobs?

Yes, but transferring it to the new employer's account is usually better. A full withdrawal before five years of service can attract tax, and withdrawing ends the compounding on the balance.
