SGST is the State Goods and Services Tax, the state's share of GST charged on supplies made within the same state.
SGST Full Form in Indian Languages
Open any GST invoice from a shop in your own state and you will see SGST printed beside CGST. State Goods and Services Tax is the half that goes to the state, and this is how it is written in six Indian languages.
How GST splits on an intra-state bill
GST replaced a stack of central and state levies on 1 July 2017. When a supply happens entirely within one state, the total rate is divided equally: half goes to the Centre as CGST, half to the state as SGST. An item taxed at 18 per cent therefore shows 9 per cent CGST and 9 per cent SGST on the bill.
The supplier collects both and deposits them separately, one to the central government and the other to the state. On a ₹1,000 item at 18 per cent you pay ₹180, split as ₹90 CGST and ₹90 SGST. The customer sees one price and one invoice.
When IGST replaces SGST
Cross a state border and the split disappears. Inter-state supplies attract IGST at the full rate, which the supplier charges and the government later apportions between the Centre and the destination state. A laptop shipped from Maharashtra to Karnataka carries IGST, not CGST and SGST.
The test is the place of supply, not the address on the invoice. A software subscription billed to a client in another state is an inter-state supply, while a meal eaten where it is served is not. A supply from a state into a union territory is also treated as inter-state and carries IGST.
Union territories without a legislature (such as Chandigarh, Ladakh and Lakshadweep) charge UTGST in place of SGST on supplies within the territory. Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir have legislatures and run their own SGST Acts, like the states.
Which state gets the money, and at what rate
GST is destination-based. The revenue belongs to the state where goods or services are finally consumed, not where they were made. That was the central bargain with manufacturing states when the tax was introduced, and it is why rate changes are argued out at the GST Council, where the states together hold a majority of the voting weight.
Rates were restructured on 22 September 2025. The old 12 and 28 per cent slabs were largely folded into 5 and 18 per cent, with a 40 per cent rate for a short list of luxury and sin goods, and 0 per cent for items such as unbranded food grains and fresh produce. Petrol, diesel and alcohol for human consumption stay outside GST. Always check the current notified rate for your HSN code before pricing.
Input tax credit: where SGST stops
If you are registered, the SGST paid on your purchases can be set off against SGST you owe on sales. It does not cross over to CGST. SGST credit can also be used against an IGST liability, but the law makes you use up your IGST credit first. Likewise, CGST credit cannot pay SGST. This cross-utilisation rule trips up new traders every filing season, so keep the three credit ledgers in mind when you read your return.
Filing, thresholds and the composition scheme
A registered business files GSTR-1 for outward supplies and GSTR-3B with payment, monthly for most, quarterly under the QRMP scheme for turnover up to ₹5 crore. Central and state liabilities appear on the same portal but are tracked and paid separately.
On a monthly return, SGST collected is netted against SGST credit first, and only the balance is deposited with the state. A month where credit exceeds tax payable leaves a balance carried forward.
Small suppliers can avoid most of this arithmetic through the composition scheme: a flat percentage of turnover, no input credit, and a ceiling the GST Council has raised from time to time. Composition dealers cannot collect tax from customers or issue a tax invoice.
Before you file, reconcile your purchase register with the credit shown in your GSTR-2B statement. A supplier who has not filed or paid cannot pass on credit, and that mismatch is the commonest reason a trader's SGST credit is reduced. Keep every tax invoice for the period the law requires, and treat an e-invoice or e-way bill as part of the same paper trail for larger consignments.
SGST is the state's half of the tax on any sale that stays inside its borders. Once you can tell when IGST takes over, the invoices for your groceries, electricity connection charges and repairs become much easier to read.
SGST Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of SGST?
SGST stands for State Goods and Services Tax. It is the state's share of GST on a supply made entirely within that state, charged at the same rate as the matching central share.
What is the difference between SGST and CGST?
Same transaction, two recipients. CGST goes to the Centre and SGST to the state where the supply is consumed, each at half the total GST rate. An 18 per cent item shows 9 per cent CGST and 9 per cent SGST.
When is IGST charged instead of SGST?
When the supply crosses a state border, or goes from a state into a union territory. IGST is charged at the full rate and then divided between the Centre and the destination state.
Can SGST credit be used to pay CGST?
No. SGST credit can pay SGST, and then IGST once your IGST credit is exhausted. CGST credit can pay CGST and IGST. Neither can be used for the other, though IGST credit can be used for all three.
What is UTGST and who charges it?
Union Territory GST is charged in place of SGST on supplies within union territories that have no legislature, such as Chandigarh, Ladakh and Lakshadweep. Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir use SGST.
How do I find the SGST on my purchase?
Read the tax invoice. For a local sale it shows CGST and SGST as separate lines, each at half the GST rate, along with the supplier's GSTIN and the HSN or SAC code. You can verify the supplier's GSTIN on the GST portal.
