What counts as an NPA

The NPA full form is Non-Performing Asset. From a bank's point of view a loan is an asset, because it earns interest. When the borrower stops paying, that asset stops performing. Under the RBI's norms, a loan account becomes an NPA when interest or principal stays overdue for more than 90 days. Farm loans follow crop-season rules instead.

Take a home loan with an EMI of ₹30,000. If the borrower misses one month, the account is not yet an NPA, although the bank will call and send reminders. If nothing is paid for more than 90 days, the account is formally classified as non-performing, and the accounting and recovery options change.

How banks classify problem loans

Before a loan becomes an NPA it is flagged as a Special Mention Account: SMA-0 when overdue up to 30 days, SMA-1 for 31 to 60 days and SMA-2 for 61 to 90 days. After 90 days it is an NPA, graded as sub-standard for the first 12 months, doubtful after that, and loss when recovery looks impossible.

Each grade carries a provisioning cost, which means the bank sets aside money from its profits against the expected loss. A secured sub-standard asset needs a basic provision of 15 per cent, doubtful assets need much more as they age, and loss assets are provided for in full. That is why bank results show both gross and net NPA figures: net NPA is the gross figure after deducting provisions.

Why NPAs matter beyond the bank

High NPAs shrink a bank's ability to lend. When a large part of the loan book is stuck, the bank has less room for new credit, tightens its checks and charges more for risk. The interest rates you see on loans and deposits are shaped by how much of the portfolio is actually paying.

For a borrower, an NPA record follows you. A defaulted account is reported to credit bureaus such as CIBIL and drags the credit score down for years, which affects home loans, car loans and credit cards. A write-off does not erase the debt. It is an accounting step, and the bank can continue recovery.

Investors in bank shares also watch the provision coverage ratio, which shows how much of the bad loans the bank has already provided for, and the slippage ratio, which shows how many fresh loans turned bad in the period. A bank with falling gross NPAs but rising slippages may be hiding trouble. These numbers are published each quarter in the bank's results and the RBI's reports.

How banks recover: SARFAESI, DRT and IBC

The SARFAESI Act of 2002 lets banks take over and sell pledged property for secured loans without first going to court, after a notice period. Debt Recovery Tribunals hear contested cases. For companies, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code of 2016 created a time-bound resolution process, with a 180-day timeline that can be extended, under the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

Wilful defaulters, who have the means to pay but deliberately do not, face tougher consequences, including being barred from fresh institutional credit. Banks also use one-time settlements, where the borrower pays a negotiated amount, which is recorded in the credit history.

India's NPA story

Indian banking's worst phase came after 2012, when loans to infrastructure, power and steel companies went bad, and the RBI's asset quality review of 2015 forced banks to recognise stress they had been carrying. Gross NPAs of scheduled commercial banks peaked above 11 per cent in March 2018, with public sector banks the worst hit.

The clean-up since then has come from the IBC, tougher provisioning, recapitalisation of public sector banks and better recovery. By late 2025 the gross NPA ratio had fallen to around 2 per cent, among the lowest levels in many years. The focus has shifted to prevention: cash-flow-based lending, closer monitoring and early warning signals on stressed accounts.

What a borrower should do early

If you expect to miss an EMI, speak to the bank before the account slips through the SMA stages. Lenders can sometimes offer a restructuring, a longer tenure or a short moratorium, but only if you ask in time. Keep all communication in writing, keep paying what you can, and check your credit report twice a year for errors.

An NPA is more than a banking statistic, because it affects how cheaply a bank can lend to everyone. As a borrower, talk to your lender well before a default reaches 90 days.

NPA Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of NPA?

NPA stands for Non-Performing Asset, a loan or advance on which the borrower has stopped paying principal or interest. Under RBI norms, most loans become NPAs when overdue for more than 90 days.

What is the difference between a standard asset and an NPA?

A standard asset is a loan being serviced normally. An NPA is one where dues have crossed 90 days, and it is then graded as sub-standard, doubtful or loss depending on how long it has stayed unpaid.

Does a write-off mean I do not have to repay?

No. A write-off is an accounting step that cleans up the bank's books. The debt remains, and the bank can continue recovery. A settlement is a separate negotiation.

How do banks recover from NPAs?

For secured loans, the SARFAESI Act allows takeover and sale of collateral without a court order. Contested cases go to Debt Recovery Tribunals, and company defaults can be taken to the NCLT under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.

How has India's NPA situation changed?

Gross NPAs of scheduled commercial banks peaked above 11 per cent in March 2018 and had fallen to about 2 per cent by late 2025. Public sector banks still hold a larger share of the remaining bad loans than private banks.

What is the difference between gross NPA and net NPA?

Gross NPA is the total of all non-performing loans. Net NPA is gross NPA minus the provisions the bank has made against them, so it shows the loss still to be absorbed.
