The school and college cadet force you have probably seen on parade

NCC stands for National Cadet Corps. It is a youth organisation for school and college students, linked to the Indian Armed Forces and headquartered in Delhi. If you have seen students in khaki marching on Republic Day or Independence Day, that is usually the NCC.

It is a tri-services organisation, so cadets belong to the Army, Navy or Air wing. Cadets learn drill and basic training in small arms, along with camp life, social service and leadership. Nobody is forced to join, and finishing the course does not bind you to the forces.

How a wartime university corps became the NCC

The roots go back to the University Corps, created under the Indian Defence Act 1917 because the Army was short of personnel. It later became the University Training Corps and then the University Officers Training Corps, set up in 1942. The NCC is seen as the successor of that line.

The NCC was formed in 1948, and the first unit was raised at Delhi in November that year. A Girls Division followed in 1949, the Air wing was added in 1950 and the Naval wing in 1952. Training was made compulsory in 1963 and voluntary again in 1968.

From second line of defence to leadership training

During the wars of 1965 and 1971, NCC cadets were treated as a second line of defence. They helped ordnance factories, worked with civil defence authorities in rescue work and traffic control, and acted as patrol parties.

After those wars the syllabus changed. Military training was reduced, and more weight went to leadership, social service and youth management. That is closer to what most cadets experience today: camps, drill, community work and a lot of early mornings.

Unity and Discipline, and who runs it

The motto, Unity and Discipline, was settled at a meeting of the Central Advisory Committee in 1980, after other options such as Duty and Unity were discussed. The idea is to bring together young people from different parts of the country and shape them into disciplined citizens.

The NCC is headed by a Director General, an officer of three-star rank, with headquarters in Delhi. Below that are Directorates in the states, so your school unit ultimately reports into one of them. NCC Day is observed every year on the fourth Sunday of November.

A cadet's year: parades, camps and certificates

A school cadet attends regular drill periods at school, usually weekly, and then a few camps in the year. These include annual training camps, and some cadets are selected for larger camps at the state or national level. There are adventure activities, trekking and social service drives, such as tree plantation and blood donation camps.

Cadets can take the NCC certificate examinations, called A, B and C, depending on their years of service and performance. Each stage has a written and practical test, and the certificates are used as an extra point in some applications. Check the rules that apply to the course or recruitment you are aiming for.

Why students bother joining

Many join for the uniform and the camps, and stay for the friendships and the confidence. If you are thinking about a career in the forces, the NCC is a useful first taste, but it does not guarantee entry. Compare it with the NDA route and the SSB interview, which are separate processes.

The NSS is another student scheme, focused on social service rather than drill. Ask your school or college whether it has an NCC unit and who the associate NCC officer is.

Some state governments, universities and recruitment boards give a small advantage to certificate holders, usually in the form of extra marks or reserved seats. The benefit differs, and it is written in the notification of the course or job, so read that notification and do not rely on hearsay. The real gain for most cadets is discipline, teamwork and the habit of showing up on time.

NCC means National Cadet Corps, the voluntary cadet force for students with the motto Unity and Discipline. To join, ask your school or college whether it has a unit.
