National Basketball Association / National Board of Accreditation
What does NBA stand for? A sports term, explained.
NBA Full Form in English, letter by letter
NBA is the National Basketball Association, the 30-team pro league of the US and Canada, and India's National Board of Accreditation.
NBA Full Form in Indian Languages
Basketball fans in India follow the NBA, the National Basketball Association, while engineering students know the same letters as the National Board of Accreditation. Below is the name in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Gujarati.
Where the NBA came from
The league was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America. It took the name National Basketball Association in 1949, after merging with the older National Basketball League.
Thirty teams play today: 15 in the Eastern Conference and 15 in the Western Conference, each split into three divisions of five. Twenty-nine teams are in the United States and one, the Toronto Raptors, is in Canada. There is no promotion or relegation. It is a closed franchise league with a salary cap, a luxury tax and an annual draft.
A second NBA matters to Indian students: the National Board of Accreditation, which assesses engineering, management and other technical programmes. In a sports story the letters mean the basketball league, and on a college website they mean the accreditation body.
How a season is played
Each team plays 82 regular-season games between late October and mid-April. The top six teams in each conference qualify directly for the playoffs, and the teams in seventh to tenth place play a play-in tournament for the last two spots. The play-in began in the 2020-21 season. Then come four playoff rounds, all best-of-seven, running into June.
The rules differ from school and college basketball in India: four 12-minute quarters rather than two halves, a 24-second shot clock, and a three-point line that has been used since the 1979-80 season.
In February the schedule pauses for All-Star weekend, with the three-point contest, the slam-dunk contest and the exhibition game. Since 2023 the league has also run an in-season tournament, the NBA Cup, in the first weeks of the season.
For a first-time viewer, the easiest way in is to watch one playoff game. Each possession has a 24-second clock, scoring comes in bursts, and a team that trails by 15 can still win. Compare it with the FIFA World Cup format, where one knockout match decides everything. A best-of-seven series is different: the better team usually wins over several games.
Teams, records and the names you will hear
The Boston Celtics lead in titles with 18, ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers on 17. Most of those were won in the 1960s and 1980s. Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls won six titles in the 1990s and never lost a Finals.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds the record for most MVP awards with six. LeBron James passed Kareem's career points total in February 2023 to become the league's all-time leading scorer.
The Oklahoma City Thunder won the 2025 title, beating the Indiana Pacers in seven games. It was the franchise's first championship since it moved from Seattle. The Golden State Warriors won four titles between 2015 and 2022 around Stephen Curry, the shooter who made the three-pointer the default weapon of the modern game.
The NBA's connection with India
Games tip off in the Indian morning and highlights spread on phones, so many fans here follow the league in short clips alongside IPL and international cricket.
The NBA has an academy for young players near Delhi, and it played its first games in India in October 2019, two pre-season matches in Mumbai between the Indiana Pacers and the Sacramento Kings.
Satnam Singh Bhamara became the first Indian-born player drafted into the NBA in 2015, when the Dallas Mavericks picked him 52nd overall. He did not play a regular-season game, and the picture for Indian players is still one of small steps.
Money, owners and the draft
A commissioner runs the league on behalf of the 30 owners. Adam Silver has held the post since 2014, succeeding David Stern, who served from 1984.
Income comes from national television contracts, sponsorship and merchandise, and the salary cap rises as media rights grow. The top players now earn more than 50 million dollars a season.
The draft has two rounds and 60 picks. A lottery decides much of the order among the weaker teams, so a team that finishes badly still has a chance at a top prospect. Players come from American colleges and from clubs around the world.
NBA the accreditation body
The National Board of Accreditation was set up under the All India Council for Technical Education to assess the quality of technical programmes. It accredits a programme for a defined period against outcome-based criteria, not a whole college.
Accreditation is separate from approval. A college needs approval to run a programme, and accreditation is a further check on quality. Recruiters and some foreign universities look for it, so students often check both before taking admission.
Learn the 30-team structure, the Celtics and Lakers title counts and the playoff format, and most NBA conversations are easy to follow. If you are a student, remember that the same three letters also appear on college accreditation pages.
