What UEFA stands for and when it began

The full form of UEFA is Union of European Football Associations. It was founded on 15 June 1954 in Basel, Switzerland, and has 55 member associations. England, Scotland and Wales are separate members, as are small federations such as Gibraltar and Kosovo.

The headquarters moved to Nyon, on Lake Geneva, in 1995. Aleksander Čeferin, a Slovenian lawyer, has been president since September 2016.

UEFA is one of six continental confederations under FIFA, alongside the AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL and OFC. It governs European football but still answers to FIFA on World Cup matters.

The competitions UEFA runs

The UEFA Champions League began in 1955 as the European Champion Clubs' Cup and was rebranded in 1992. Since the 2024-25 season it uses a single league phase in which 36 clubs each play eight matches, followed by knockout rounds.

Below it sit the Europa League (the former UEFA Cup, running since 1971) and the Conference League, added in 2021. The Europa League winner qualifies for the next Champions League.

For national teams UEFA runs the European Championship, first played in 1960 and now a 24-team finals held every four years, and the Nations League, launched in 2018. The Super Cup, Women's Champions League, futsal and youth competitions fill out the calendar.

UEFA's own history is tied to the post-war growth of European club football, when national leagues were already running but there was no continental competition to settle which club was best. The European Cup answered that question, and the Euros later did the same for national teams. Qualification is what confuses most newcomers. A club reaches the Champions League through its domestic league position or by winning the Europa League. National teams qualify from groups before the finals.

Records that come up in every discussion

Real Madrid hold the record with 15 Champions League and European Cup titles. AC Milan have seven, Liverpool and Bayern Munich six each, and Barcelona five. Check the latest final for any changes, since the numbers move.

Spain have won the European Championship four times (1964, 2008, 2012 and 2024), a record, ahead of Germany's three. Portugal won in 2016, and Italy won the delayed Euro 2020, played in 2021 because of the pandemic.

UEFA's club competitions distribute a very large amount in prize money and solidarity payments every season, which is why a Champions League place is worth more to a club than most transfer fees.

That commercial weight is also why broadcasters in India bid for the rights, although no Indian club plays in these competitions. Streaming on an OTT platform has widened the audience further, since a match can be watched on a phone as easily as on a television.

The comparison Indian fans make is with the IPL: both are leagues where money and star power are concentrated, though the Champions League draws its clubs from many countries and not from one franchise system.

How to watch UEFA competitions in India

Sony Pictures Networks India holds the UEFA club-competition rights for 2024 to 2027, with matches on the Sony Sports channels and streaming on SonyLIV. Rights are renewed in cycles, so check the current broadcaster before a season starts.

Kick-off times are the catch. European evening matches kick off between about 10:15 pm and 1:30 am Indian time, depending on the season and the clock change in Europe. Finals are played on Saturday evenings in Europe, which means a late night or early morning on Sunday in India.

India sits in the Asian confederation, the AFC, so Indian clubs do not qualify for UEFA competitions. Interest here is as viewers of Europe's clubs and stars.

UEFA's power, money and politics

UEFA decides competition formats, prize distribution and licensing and fair-play rules, and it has the final say on where finals are hosted. Its relationship with the richest domestic leagues is a permanent negotiation over calendars and money.

The European Super League proposal of April 2021 tested that authority. Twelve clubs announced a breakaway and the plan collapsed within days after protests from fans, players and governments.

Financial fair play rules, now called the Club Licensing and Financial Sustainability Regulations, limit how much a club can lose or spend relative to income. They are one of the most argued-over parts of UEFA's work.

So UEFA, the Union of European Football Associations, is European football's organiser, the reason the Champions League and the Euros exist and the reason many Indian fans stay up past midnight on weekdays.
