The full form and where it began

The MSF full form is Médecins Sans Frontières, which is French for 'Doctors Without Borders'. The organisation was founded in France in 1971 by doctors and journalists, some of whom had worked in Biafra during the Nigerian civil war. They wanted a group that could treat patients and also speak publicly about what they saw.

That double purpose still defines it. Teams run medical programmes in crisis zones, and the principle of témoignage, or bearing witness, means MSF reports on attacks on hospitals, forced displacement and neglected emergencies. It was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999, and it works alongside WHO and UNICEF in many emergencies.

How MSF is funded and why it matters

The great majority of MSF's income, about nine-tenths or more, comes from private donors and not from governments. That is deliberate. It lets MSF negotiate access on medical grounds alone and leave a country when its independence is compromised, without being tied to a donor government's foreign policy.

A typical field team is not only doctors. Nurses, midwives, pharmacists, logisticians, psychologists, water and sanitation specialists and administrators all work together, and the logisticians often decide whether the medicine reaches the patient.

Where MSF works and what it treats

MSF runs projects in more than 70 countries, usually where there is conflict, displacement, epidemic disease or a collapsed health system. Programmes include treating severe malnutrition, cholera and measles responses, HIV and tuberculosis care, maternal and surgical care in refugee settings, and vaccination campaigns.

Recent emergencies have included Ebola outbreaks, the wars in Yemen, Sudan and Gaza, and the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh. In 2015 a US airstrike destroyed MSF's trauma hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan, and the organisation publicised the attack as part of its witness role.

The workday goes well beyond the clinic: vaccination rounds, keeping the cold chain for vaccines, chlorinating water, keeping generators running and moving supplies along conflict-affected roads.

MSF also trains and employs a very large number of local staff in each country where it works, and they form most of its workforce. International staff bring specialist skills for a limited time, but nurses, drivers, translators and counsellors from the affected community carry the programme day to day. That is why local recruitment, not only international postings, is a major part of how MSF works.

MSF in India

MSF has worked in India since 1999. Its India projects have included HIV, tuberculosis and hepatitis care in Manipur, a clinic for drug-resistant tuberculosis in Mumbai, mental health services in Jammu and Kashmir, mobile clinics in remote parts of Chhattisgarh, and kala-azar and HIV care in Bihar. The list of active projects changes, and the latest is on the MSF India site.

India also matters to MSF because Indian generic drug makers supply many low-cost medicines used in its programmes. MSF has campaigned in India on drug patents and prices, including a challenge on a patent for the tuberculosis drug bedaquiline. Indian doctors, nurses and logisticians can join field missions through MSF's recruitment offices. Candidates usually need prior experience and language skills, and postings commonly last several months to a year.

How MSF differs from other aid groups

The International Committee of the Red Cross works on strict neutrality and rarely speaks out in public, and United Nations agencies rely on member-state funding and government cooperation. MSF sits between the two: impartial medical care, an open willingness to speak, and an exit option when operations are blocked.

That independence has costs. MSF has withdrawn from countries when it judged that its teams could not work freely. Its annual reports break down income and spending country by country, which is the place to check where donations go.

MSF's appeal to donors is in its name: medical help that crosses borders without waiting for permission. Its annual reports are the best way to see where the money and the staff actually go.

MSF Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of MSF?

Mostly by private individual donors, around nine-tenths of its income or more. This keeps donor governments out of its decisions and lets it speak publicly about what its teams see.
