ISD Full Form
International Subscriber Dialling
What does ISD stand for? A technology term, explained.
ISD Full Form in English, letter by letter
ISD means International Subscriber Dialling, the facility to dial another country directly. In GST it also means Input Service Distributor.
ISD Full Form in Indian Languages
ISD stands for International Subscriber Dialling, the system that lets you dial a foreign number yourself, with no operator in between.
What the ISD full form means
ISD means International Subscriber Dialling (spelt Dialing in American English). It is also called IDD, for International Direct Dialling. Both describe a call that the subscriber dials directly to another country.
The contrast is STD, Subscriber Trunk Dialling, the domestic equivalent. An STD call crosses telecom trunks inside India, while an ISD call crosses a border.
The abbreviation recalls the 1990s, when "STD / ISD / PCO" boards marked the shops where many Indians made their first long-distance calls.
The international numbering plan is maintained by the ITU, the UN telecom agency, which is why every country has its own calling code.
How to dial an ISD call from India
The formula is exit code, country code, then the number. From India the exit code is 00, so a London landline reads 00 44 20 xxxx xxxx, with the leading zero of the area code dropped.
On a mobile phone, press and hold the zero key to get '+' and dial +44... instead. The '+' stands for the local exit code of whichever country you are in, which is why it works while roaming.
Some codes to remember: +91 for India, +1 for the US and Canada, +44 for the UK, +971 for the UAE, +65 for Singapore, +61 for Australia and +81 for Japan.
Calling into India works the same way: dial +91 and then the ten-digit mobile number, without the zero you would dial inside the country. Codes are not always one digit. +7 covers Russia and Kazakhstan, for instance.
A useful habit is to test a new number with a short message before a long call. A wrongly dialled code can send your call to a different country, and some destinations carry high per-minute charges.
From PCO booths to internet calling
In the 1990s an ISD call cost tens of rupees a minute and was usually made from a staffed PCO booth with a rate list on the wall.
Private operators and lower tariffs followed liberalisation, and by the 2000s direct international calling was routine for families with relatives abroad.
Internet calling then changed things again. Most family calls abroad now go over WhatsApp or FaceTime on a data plan instead of a per-minute ISD tariff.
Operator-assisted calling has almost vanished. What remains is direct-dial ISD, billed by the telecom company.
Where ISD still matters
Traditional ISD lines are still used by businesses, banks and anything that needs a reliable, billable and traceable voice connection.
International roaming packs and eSIMs let an Indian number receive calls abroad. A person calling your Indian number from another country is still making an ISD call from their side.
Rates differ by country and plan, so check your operator's international tariff before a long call.
For exams the trio to remember is STD for domestic trunk dialling, ISD for international dialling and PCO for public call office.
A different ISD: Input Service Distributor
In Indian tax, ISD means Input Service Distributor under GST: an office, often a head office, that receives invoices for services used by several branches and distributes the input tax credit among them. It needs a separate GST registration as an ISD.
The two meanings never overlap in practice. A phone bill or country code means dialling, while a GST return or tax notice means the distributor.
Two mistakes people make
The first is keeping the trunk zero when calling abroad. A number written as 020 7946 xxxx means you drop the zero and dial +44 20 7946 xxxx.
The second is treating ISD and IDD as different services. They are the same facility under two names, and IDD is the wording used on many bills and in international standards.
Checking an international number before you call
Missed calls from unfamiliar numbers with foreign codes are a common trick in India, meant to make you call back a premium-rate line or start a scam conversation. If you do not recognise a number, do not call back. Check the country code first, and block the number if in doubt.
When you save contacts abroad, store them in full international format with the + and country code. They then work from any country and when you travel.
Beyond exams, ISD is useful for the occasions when a call must cross a border over a proper phone line, and for reading a GST notice that mentions the distributor.
ISD Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of ISD?
ISD stands for International Subscriber Dialling, the facility that lets a subscriber dial another country directly. It is also known as International Direct Dialling (IDD).
What is the difference between STD and ISD?
STD, or Subscriber Trunk Dialling, is for long-distance calls inside a country. ISD is for calls that cross a border and need a country code.
How do I make an ISD call from India?
Dial 00, then the country code, then the number without its leading zero. On a mobile, '+' works instead of 00 and is easier while roaming.
What is India's country code?
India's code is +91. A caller abroad dials +91 followed by the ten-digit mobile number, or the area code and landline number without the leading zero.
Are ISD calls still charged per minute?
On traditional operator networks, usually yes, and rates vary by country and plan. Most personal international calling now uses internet voice and video apps.
What does ISD mean in GST?
In GST, ISD means Input Service Distributor, an office that distributes input tax credit on common services to the branches that used them.
