Internal Combustion Engine is an engine in which fuel is mixed with air and burned inside a sealed cylinder. The hot expanding gas pushes a piston down, the piston turns the crankshaft, and the transmission carries that rotation to the wheels. The four-stroke cycle, step by step
Most car engines run the four-stroke Otto cycle. Intake draws in fuel and air, compression squeezes the mixture, the spark plug fires to burn it, and the exhaust stroke pushes the burnt gas out. That is four strokes, two crankshaft revolutions and one power stroke per cylinder.
Diesel engines have no spark plug. They compress air so hard that it becomes hot enough to ignite the fuel injected into it, which is called compression ignition. The higher compression is why diesels give better mileage and stronger low-speed pull.
A modern four-cylinder engine has hundreds of moving parts: pistons, connecting rods, camshafts, valves, timing chain, injectors, turbocharger and separate oil and coolant circuits. An electric drivetrain has far fewer, which explains most of the difference in servicing.
Efficiency and the heat that goes to waste
An ICE turns only part of the fuel's energy into motion. Petrol engines typically manage about 20 to 35 percent thermal efficiency and diesels about 35 to 45 percent. The rest leaves as heat through the exhaust and the radiator, which is why both run so hot.
India moved to Bharat Stage VI emission norms in April 2020. Diesel cars needed particulate filters and extra aftertreatment, and the cost of this is a large part of why small diesel hatchbacks and compact sedans left the market.
Carbon dioxide released per litre of fuel is fixed by chemistry, so the only way to cut an ICE vehicle's emissions is to burn less fuel, through smaller engines, lighter bodies and hybridisation.
Why the ICE still dominates Indian roads
Petrol, diesel and CNG cars still account for the large majority of new car sales in India, and EVs are a small share of cars even though they do better among scooters and three-wheelers. Charging networks are thinner outside the big cities, and a comparable ICE car is usually cheaper to buy.
Refuelling takes a few minutes and a petrol pump is rarely far away. For a family covering long distances on unpredictable routes, that is practical arithmetic, not nostalgia.
Hybrids sit between the two. A strong hybrid runs on its motor at city speeds and starts the ICE for highways, often returning over 20 km/l without ever being plugged in.

ICE has other uses. In medicine it can mean intracardiac echocardiography. On phones and emergency cards, ICE means 'In Case of Emergency', the contact a paramedic should call. In the United States, ICE is also the abbreviation of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
