An aircraft engine maker first

Few people guess that BMW started with aircraft. The business traces back to Otto Flugmaschinenfabrik, founded by Gustav Otto in Bavaria, which became Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. BMW itself counts 7 March 1916 as the date of its founding, and that is why you will see 1916 quoted as the starting year. The company took the name Bayerische Motoren Werke in 1922.

The letters BMW are slightly older than that. A firm called Rapp Motorenwerke, set up in 1913 by Karl Rapp, was renamed Bayerische Motoren Werke in 1917, and in 1922 its name, engine business and logo passed to the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. Its early work was aircraft engines for the German air force in the First World War.

From bikes to cars

Once the war was over, aircraft engines were restricted, so BMW moved into motorcycle engines, farm equipment, household goods and railway brakes. Its first motorcycle was the R32 of 1923. It entered cars in 1928 by buying Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach, which built the Austin 7 under licence as the Dixi. The first car sold as a BMW was the 3/15, a rebadged Dixi. In the 1930s it added sports cars and bigger luxury models.

The company nearly collapsed after the Second World War. In 1959 the Quandt family invested heavily and saved it from bankruptcy, and the Quandt family is still a major shareholder.

The roundel and the slogan

The blue and white circle came from the Rapp logo, which was a black ring with the company name around it. BMW kept the black ring and changed the middle to the blue and white of the Bavarian flag. The popular story that it shows a spinning propeller against a blue sky comes from a 1929 advertisement and is not the real origin. The latest design, introduced in 2020, dropped the 3D effects and the black outline.

The long-running German slogan is 'Freude am Fahren', meaning joy of driving. 'The Ultimate Driving Machine' was created for North America in the 1970s and became the tagline most Indian car buffs know.

How Mini and Rolls-Royce ended up under the same roof

BMW bought the Rover Group in 1994, and the deal went badly and cost it heavy losses. In 2000 it sold most of the Rover brands and kept only Mini. In 1998 it had also acquired the rights to the Rolls-Royce name from Vickers, with the car business starting under BMW in 2003. That is why a Mini built near Oxford and a Rolls-Royce assembled at Goodwood both belong to a company based in Munich.

The group also has a long record in motorsport, especially touring cars and sports cars, and its motorcycle arm competes in events such as the Isle of Man TT.

How to read a BMW name

BMW's numbers follow a pattern that helps when you shop. A 3 Series is the compact executive saloon, a 5 Series is the larger executive car and a 7 Series is the flagship. Even numbers such as 4 and 8 are used for coupes, and the 2 Series sits below the 3. The letter X marks the SUV range, so an X1 is the smallest and an X7 the biggest. An 'i' in the name, as in iX or i4, means the car is electric, and 'M' marks the performance cars from BMW's motorsport division.

The same logic does not apply to motorcycles. Models such as the G 310 R are built in India in partnership with TVS, while the bigger bikes carry names like R 1250 GS.

Where BMW stands today

BMW Group sells cars under the BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce brands, and makes motorcycles under BMW Motorrad. Recent years have seen it deliver about two and a half million vehicles annually, which puts it among the world's larger premium carmakers. It builds vehicles in Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, India and China, and has been pushing an EV line-up alongside petrol and diesel cars.

In India, BMW India began as a sales company in 2006 with a head office in Gurugram. The Chennai plant, opened in 2007, assembles cars from imported kits, a method called complete knock-down. In May 2026 Milan Nedeljković took over from Oliver Zipse as chairman of the board of management.

BMW, Mercedes and Audi: a quick way to tell them apart

The three German luxury names are often lumped together, but each has its own history. BMW's headquarters in Munich was completed in 1972 and is shaped like the cylinder head of a four-cylinder engine, and BMW Welt, the delivery and exhibition centre next to it, opened in 2007. Mercedes-Benz is based in Stuttgart and Audi in Ingolstadt, both with a long motorsport past of their own. If a quiz asks about 'Bavarian' cars, the answer is BMW, because Bavaria is the state the name refers to.

BMW is Bayerische Motoren Werke, the Bavarian Motor Works, and the name predates the cars by several years. Figures like production numbers change every year, so check the company's annual report for the latest.
