ICD Full Form
Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator / International Classification of Diseases
What does ICD stand for? A medical term, explained.
ICD Full Form in English, letter by letter
ICD means Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, a heart device that shocks dangerous rhythms, and International Classification of Diseases (WHO).
ICD Full Form in Indian Languages
Cardiologists use ICD for the Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, a device that watches the heartbeat and shocks it back when it runs wild, while hospital records use ICD for a disease coding system. Both meanings are explained, with the name in six Indian languages below.
What an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Does
ICD in cardiology is the Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator: a battery-powered device, about the size of a small matchbox or stopwatch, placed under the skin below the left collarbone with one or two leads threaded through a vein into the heart. It monitors the heartbeat around the clock.
When the lower chambers beat too fast, it first tries gentle pacing or a low-energy shock called cardioversion. For chaotic ventricular fibrillation it delivers a high-energy shock, typically 25 to 40 joules in modern devices, which stops the fibrillation and lets the heart's natural rhythm resume. It is the therapy with the strongest evidence for preventing sudden cardiac death in people at high risk.
Who Qualifies for an ICD
Two groups qualify. Secondary prevention covers people who have already survived a cardiac arrest or a sustained ventricular tachycardia. Primary prevention covers patients whose left ventricular ejection fraction, the share of blood the heart pumps out with each beat, stays at 35% or less despite optimal medication, often with heart failure symptoms. Trials such as MADIT-II and SCD-HeFT established the benefit.
The decision also weighs age, other illnesses, kidney function and life expectancy, along with the device's own risks: infection at the pocket, bleeding, lead problems and inappropriate shocks for rhythms that did not need treating. Some patients are first offered a wearable external defibrillator vest to see how often shocks would be needed.
Types of ICD and Follow-up
The standard transvenous ICD threads leads through a vein into the right ventricle, and most also pace when the heart beats too slowly. The subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD), available since 2012, lies beside the breastbone with a lead under the skin and never touches the heart. It suits younger patients and those with blocked veins, though it cannot pace. A CRT-D adds a third lead to resynchronise the two ventricles in heart failure.
Batteries last roughly five to seven years depending on how often the device works. Replacement is a small operation on the pocket and the leads usually stay. Patients attend a device clinic every few months, and remote monitoring sends readings from home where available.
After a shock, a single shock with a quick recovery is usually reported at the next review, but two or more shocks in a day, or a shock with feeling unwell, needs urgent medical help.
Cost and Access in India
Implantable defibrillators are mostly imported, with Medtronic, Abbott, Boston Scientific and Biotronik among the main suppliers, and a transvenous ICD typically costs several lakh rupees, with a CRT-D costing considerably more. That is beyond many families without insurance or a government scheme, and metro tertiary centres perform most implants.
Cardiologists point to a gap. Many patients qualify on paper after a heart attack with reduced ejection fraction, yet implants stay underused because of cost, distance from a specialist centre and uncertainty about follow-up. Public hospitals such as AIIMS Delhi help close the gap, but waiting lists are real, and some state schemes and charitable funds support the cost of devices.
The Other ICD: International Classification of Diseases
In hospital records and insurance claims, ICD means International Classification of Diseases, the coding system maintained by the WHO. Every disease and condition has a code, such as the ICD-10 and the newer ICD-11 versions, and hospitals, insurers and health statistics offices use them to record diagnoses. A discharge summary or claim form that lists ICD-10 codes has nothing to do with the heart device.
Tests such as an ECG or MRI are used to decide on a heart device, and the diagnosis that follows is then recorded with a classification code.
An ICD is a small device with a large job: detecting a rhythm that would otherwise be fatal and ending it in seconds. If your reports show a low ejection fraction, ask your cardiologist whether you qualify, and keep the device clinic visits.
ICD Full Form: Common Questions
What is the full form of ICD?
The full form of ICD in cardiology is Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, a device placed under the chest skin that monitors heart rhythm and delivers a shock to stop life-threatening fast rhythms. In health records, ICD means International Classification of Diseases.
Who needs an ICD?
Two main groups: people who have survived a cardiac arrest or sustained ventricular tachycardia, and those with an ejection fraction of 35% or less despite medication, usually after a heart attack or with heart failure. Age, other illnesses and life expectancy are weighed first.
What is the difference between a pacemaker and an ICD?
A pacemaker mainly treats slow rhythms with small pacing impulses. An ICD treats fast, dangerous rhythms with pacing and defibrillation shocks, and most modern ICDs can also pace like a pacemaker. A CRT-D adds a third lead to resynchronise the ventricles in selected heart failure patients.
How long does an ICD battery last?
About five to seven years in most patients, shorter if the device shocks often. Battery replacement is a minor procedure that changes the generator while keeping the existing leads, and the device clinic flags low battery well in advance.
Can you live normally with an ICD?
Yes. Most people return to work, travel and exercise, avoiding direct blows to the pocket and certain high-voltage occupations. MRI scans are possible on MRI-conditional devices with proper programming, airport security checks are safe, and regular device clinic reviews keep the settings current.
What does ICD-10 mean?
It is the tenth revision of the International Classification of Diseases, a WHO list of codes for diseases and health conditions used in hospital records and insurance claims. It is unrelated to the heart device.
