GNM is short for General Nursing and Midwifery. It is a diploma that prepares you to work as a nurse in hospitals, clinics and maternity units. Colleges usually describe it as three years of study plus six months of internship, which is where the figure of three and a half years comes from.

The word midwifery matters. You are trained not only for ward duty but also to assist in childbirth and care for mothers and newborns.

Where GNM sits among the nursing courses

The Indian Nursing Council (INC) recognises several levels of nurse training. ANM comes first, a two-year course after 10+2. GNM follows, and then B.Sc. Nursing, a four-year degree usually meant for science students.

After GNM you can add the Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing, which takes two years. After a B.Sc. Nursing there is M.Sc. Nursing. So GNM is a starting point, not a dead end.

Eligibility in practice

Most colleges ask for 10+2 with around 40 percent marks and English as a subject. Many prefer or require science subjects, and some accept arts students in specified cases. The usual age range quoted is 17 to 35, with relaxations for certain groups, but each state's nursing council and admission notice has the final word.

Admission rules differ from state to state. Some states hold their own entrance test, and some admit on 10+2 marks. Government nursing schools attached to district hospitals are usually cheaper than private ones, and seats go fast.

Getting registered after the course

After the course you register with the nursing council of your state, for example the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council in Tamil Nadu. Without registration you cannot work as a nurse in most places.

A practical tip: keep your 10+2 marksheet, transfer certificate and category certificate in one folder from the start. Nursing schools often ask for them on the day of counselling, and a missing paper can cost you the seat.

How nurse training began in India

Formal nursing training here goes back to 1871, when a school at the Government General Hospital in Madras began a midwives programme with a small group of students. Florence Nightingale also took a close interest in nursing in India, first for the army.

Over the following decades, mission and government hospitals opened schools across the country. That is where the idea of a hospital-based nurse and midwife diploma took root.

What the work really looks like

A GNM nurse may start in a government hospital ward, a private hospital, a nursing home or a primary health centre. Shifts can be long, including nights, and the work is physically tiring. There is steady demand for trained people.

Costs, hostels and what to ask before joining

Fees differ widely between government and private schools. Ask for the full fee in writing, including hostel, uniform, exam and clinical posting charges, and ask how many seats are sanctioned and where the clinical training takes place. A school with a tie-up hospital that offers real hands-on duty is worth more than a fancy brochure.

Speak to a current student or a recent graduate before paying. They can tell you whether the posting schedule is followed and how placement actually works.

Before paying fees to any private nursing school, check that it is recognised by the Indian Nursing Council and by your state nursing council. A diploma from an unrecognised institute may not get you registered.
