Course structure and subjects, year by year
The early years
The first year builds the science base: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Nutrition and Nursing Foundations, taught alongside laboratory and practice work. The next year adds Pharmacology, Pathology and Medical-Surgical Nursing, and clinical postings begin in hospital wards where students take vital signs, give medicines and write nursing notes under supervision.
The later years and internship
Later years move into specialities such as Child Health Nursing, Mental Health Nursing and Midwifery, with time in paediatric, psychiatric and maternity units. The final stretch covers Community Health Nursing, Nursing Research and Management of Nursing Services along with the internship, where students work in hospital wards and rural health centres with real responsibility.
How nursing careers progress
Most graduates start as staff nurses doing bedside care in government or private hospitals. Government posts come through recruitment tests held by state health departments and by bodies such as AIIMS, with a fixed pay scale and benefits. Private salaries vary a great deal by city and hospital, and they rise with experience and specialisation.
Other routes include community health nursing in rural centres, teaching in nursing colleges, the Military Nursing Service, and ICU, operation theatre and dialysis roles. An MSc Nursing opens specialisation in areas such as paediatric, psychiatric or critical care, while an MBA in healthcare management leads towards hospital administration.
Going abroad: licensing exams and timing
Indian nurses are recruited in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and the Gulf. The path runs through a licensing exam: NCLEX-RN for the United States and, for the UK, the Nursing and Midwifery Council's CBT followed by an OSCE, with IELTS or OET to show English ability. Gulf countries have their own licensing exams.
Plan early. Rules on degree recognition, document verification and visas change, and the exams are competitive. Many nurses build a year or two of Indian ward or ICU experience first, because overseas applications often ask for clinical hours. Use the regulator's own website for the current requirements, and be careful with agents who charge heavy upfront fees.
GNM, ANM, BSc Nursing and Post Basic: which is which
Students regularly confuse these. ANM is a two-year course oriented towards village-level health work, GNM is a three-and-a-half-year diploma in general nursing and midwifery, and BSc Nursing is the four-year degree. A GNM holder can later take the Post Basic BSc Nursing programme, which is shorter than the regular degree.
The degree has the strongest progression path into postgraduate study, teaching and administration, while ANM and GNM get you into the workforce sooner. The choice usually comes down to how much time and money you can put in before your first posting.
