How a fixed deposit works

The FD full form is Fixed Deposit. You give a bank a lump sum for an agreed period. The rate is fixed on the day you book the deposit, and the money comes back with interest on the maturity date.

Tenures usually run from seven days to ten years, so an FD can serve as a parking place for a month or as a corpus for a child's education. The rate stays the same even if the bank cuts or raises its rates the next week.

Interest can be paid out monthly, quarterly or at maturity. In a cumulative FD the interest is added back to the principal, usually every quarter, and you receive everything at the end. A payout FD suits a retired person who needs regular income, and a cumulative FD suits someone saving towards a goal.

Both banks and NBFCs issue FDs, but the safety differs. Bank deposits are covered by DICGC insurance up to Rs 5 lakh per depositor per bank, which includes principal and interest across all your accounts in that bank. NBFC deposits carry no such cover, and that is the first thing to weigh when a non-bank offers a higher rate.

Choosing the bank and the tenure

Rates vary by type of lender. Large public sector banks usually quote the lowest rates, private banks sit in the middle, and small finance banks often pay the most. The extra return from a small finance bank comes with a smaller balance sheet, so keep any single deposit within the insured limit.

Senior citizens (60 and above) normally get an extra 0.25 to 0.50 percentage points. Every bank publishes its rate card on its website, so a ten-minute comparison before booking is worth the time.

Rates move with the RBI repo rate cycle, with a lag. A deposit booked when rates are low stays low for its whole tenure, which is why many savers avoid locking everything for five years at the bottom of the cycle.

A practical way to handle this is laddering. Suppose you have Rs 3 lakh. Put Rs 1 lakh each into one-year, two-year and three-year FDs. When the first matures you renew it for three years, and after a while one deposit matures every year. You get regular access to cash and a spread of rates, instead of one big bet on today's rate.

Tax on FD interest

FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. There is no special exemption for it, and it is taxable every year as it accrues, even if a cumulative FD pays you only at maturity.

Banks deduct TDS once interest from a bank's deposits crosses the annual threshold. The limit was Rs 40,000 for most people and Rs 50,000 for senior citizens, and the Union Budget 2025 raised it to Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh respectively from FY 2025-26. Check the current figure with your bank, because these limits change.

If your total income is below the taxable limit, you can submit Form 15G (below 60 years) or Form 15H (senior citizens) so that no TDS is cut. Submit it at the start of each financial year to every bank where you hold deposits. Even when TDS is cut, the amount shows in your Form 26AS and AIS, and you claim credit for it while filing your ITR.

Under the old tax regime, a five-year tax-saving FD qualifies for a deduction of up to Rs 1.5 lakh under Section 80C, but it locks the money for the full five years with no premature withdrawal. Senior citizens can claim up to Rs 50,000 on interest from bank and post office deposits under Section 80TTB in the old regime. The default new regime allows neither deduction.

Breaking an FD or borrowing against it

Most FDs can be closed before maturity. The bank pays the rate applicable for the period the money actually stayed, minus a penalty that is usually 0.5 to 1 percentage point. Some banks charge nothing on small deposits closed after a minimum period, and tax-saving FDs cannot be closed early at all.

If you need cash for a short time, a loan or overdraft against the FD is usually cheaper than breaking it. Banks typically lend up to 90 per cent of the deposit value at 1 to 2 points above the FD rate, and the deposit keeps earning interest meanwhile.

Add a nomination when you book an FD. If the depositor dies, the nominee can claim the money with a death certificate and identity proof, and the process is far quicker than a claim through legal heirs.

Keep a note of each maturity date and set a reminder about a fortnight earlier. If you do nothing, many banks renew the deposit automatically at the rate prevailing that day, which may be lower than what another bank is paying.

An FD will not give the highest return among investments, but you know the rate, the date and the amount in advance. For money you cannot afford to lose, such as an emergency fund or next year's fees, that certainty is the reason people keep using it.

FD Full Form: Common Questions

What is the full form of FD?

The full form of FD is Fixed Deposit, a term deposit with a bank or NBFC that pays interest at a fixed rate for an agreed period.

What is the minimum amount for an FD?

Many banks accept FDs from Rs 1,000, and a few start lower. Some special schemes ask for more. The exact minimum is printed on the bank's rate card and on its website.

Can I withdraw an FD before maturity?

Yes, in most cases, with a penalty of roughly 0.5 to 1 per cent on the rate. A five-year tax-saving FD cannot be closed early. If you need money for a short period, a loan against the FD is often cheaper.

Is FD interest taxable in India?

Yes. It is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate every year. TDS is cut once interest crosses the bank's annual threshold, unless you submit Form 15G or 15H and your income is below the taxable limit.

Is an FD safe if the bank fails?

Deposits in a bank are insured by DICGC up to Rs 5 lakh per depositor per bank, covering principal and interest together. Amounts above that are not insured, so large savings are often split across banks.

Which is better, FD or RD?

An FD suits a lump sum you already have. A recurring deposit suits a fixed monthly saving. Both pay a fixed rate, and the rates are usually close to each other.
