What a CPA Licence Is

CPA stands for Certified Public Accountant. It is a professional licence to practise accounting in the United States, issued by the board of accountancy of a state or territory. There are 55 such licensing jurisdictions, so there is no single national licence.

A CPA can audit and attest financial statements, prepare and sign US tax returns, and work in public accounting, corporate finance and consulting. Employers in India value it mainly for work linked to US clients, Big Four firms and global capability centres.

The Uniform CPA Examination

The exam is set by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and run with NASBA, and it can be taken at Prometric centres, including several in India. Since January 2024 it has three core sections: Auditing and Attestation, Financial Accounting and Reporting, and Taxation and Regulation. Candidates then choose one discipline section: Business Analysis and Reporting, Information Systems and Controls, or Tax Compliance and Planning.

Each section is four hours long. After passing the first section, a candidate has 30 months to pass the rest, and each section requires a score of 75 on a scale of 99. Pass rates for individual sections are around half, so many people study for a year or more while working.

Eligibility for Indian Candidates

The usual education requirement is 150 semester credit hours, which a three-year Indian bachelor's degree does not reach. Candidates fill the gap with a master's degree, a postgraduate programme or extra courses, and have their transcripts evaluated by an approved credential evaluation service. The state board decides whether the credits are accepted.

Some states now accept 120 credit hours plus extra work experience, so check the rules of the state you choose. Most states also ask for one to two years of experience supervised by a licensed CPA before issuing the licence, and a few require an ethics exam.

CPA and CA Compared

The Chartered Accountant qualification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is what lets a person sign statutory audits in India under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949. A US CPA does not carry that right in India.

The CPA exam is generally faster to complete than the CA route, and it opens roles in US accounting and reporting. Many Indian accountants hold both, and some add credentials such as ACCA, CMA or CFA. The sensible question is not which is better but which clients and countries you want to work for.

Cost, Renewal and Other Meanings

Budget for credential evaluation, application fees, exam section fees, licence fees and exam-centre travel. The total commonly runs to several thousand US dollars, and prices change often, so check the current fee tables on the board and NASBA sites. A licensed CPA renews every one to three years depending on the state, with continuing professional education hours.

Outside the United States, CPA also stands for Chartered Professional Accountant in Canada and Certified Practising Accountant in Australia, though Australia's body now uses the name CPA Australia. In marketing, CPA means cost per acquisition. For a commerce exam in India, the US licence is the usual meaning.

The CPA is a US licence with state-level rules. For an Indian candidate it is worth the effort if US clients or global firms are part of the plan.
